A GP practice in Wiltshire is seeking an experienced Phlebotomist to join their team. In this role, you will perform venepuncture and assist clinical staff in delivering high-quality patient care. The ideal candidate should have relevant phlebotomy qualifications and experience in a healthcare setting. Westrop Medical Practice have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic Phlebotomist to join the team to provide high quality patient care and support our busy clinical service. You should have experience of working in General Practice/Primary Care and be prepared to work as part of a varied multi-disciplinary team.
The Phlebotomist will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.
The Phlebotomist will work under indirect supervision of thenurse team leader and undertakes task and duties delegated by the nurse teamleader or a suitably qualified regulated professional. You will workcollaboratively with the clinical team to meet the needs of patients of thehealth centre, following policy and procedure
Perform safe, accurate venepuncture for adults andchildren
Collect, label, and process blood samples followingstrict protocols
Maintain a clean, organised clinical environment
Deliver friendly, reassuring care to patients ofall ages
Work as part of a supportive, multidisciplinaryteam
Prepareand maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patientcare interventions. Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being,and how it can be promoted. Give accurate and appropriate information topatients and groups within own competence.

Job Description

Hours: 15hours per week
Job Purpose
The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining highqualityblood samples from patients using venepuncture techniques, ensuring safehandling, accurate labelling, and timely transportation to the laboratory. Therole supports clinical teams by contributing to effective patient care,maintaining infection prevention standards, and delivering a positive patientexperience.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Performvenepuncture on adults (and children if trained) following clinicalguidelines.
Ensurecorrect patient identification, specimen labelling, and completion ofrequest forms.
Prepareand store blood samples according to laboratory requirements.
Followinfection prevention and control (IPC) standards, including use of PPE andsafe disposal of sharps.
Avoidsand manages complications such as difficult veins, fainting, or unexpectedreactions.
Maintainaccurate clinical records within the electronic patient record
Assistwith the collection of other specimens (e.g., urine, swabs) if required.
Ensuresafe handling of blood and bodily fluids in line with organisationalpolicy.
Providereassurance and support to anxious or vulnerable patients.
Communicateclearly and professionally, explaining procedures and gaining consent.
Treatall patients with dignity, respect, and confidentiality.
Operational Responsibilities
Maintainclinical areas, stock levels, and equipment (e.g., tourniquets,vacutainers).
Reportfaults or shortages promptly.
Adhereto all health and safety policies, including COSHH and sharps policies.
Workeffectively with the wider healthcare team to support smooth clinic flow.
Professional Requirements
Maintainprofessional boundaries and attitudes at all times.
Participatein mandatory training (e.g., Basic Life Support, IPC).
Followsafeguarding procedures and elevate concerns appropriately.
Health, safety andsecurity
Use thepersonal security systems within the workplace according to practiceguidelines.
Identifythe risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that managesthe risks.
Useappropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in eachclinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards.
Reportingof any potential risks identified, including:
Handwashing
Collectionand handling of laboratory specimens
Segregationand disposal of waste materials
Decontaminationof instruments and clinical equipment
Reportingand treatment of sharps injuries
Dealingwith blood and body fluid spillages
Assistpatients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control Measures
