Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Northumbria Primary Care for a Band 4 Registered Pharmacy Technician to join the team, supporting a group of GP practices within our West Northumberland Neighbourhood (NPC Ponteland and NPC Haydon Bridge and Allendale). The successful candidate will work closely with clinical and administrative colleagues to process a wide range of medication related tasks, working between Ponteland and Haydon Bridge, with base site at Ponteland and mileage claimed from base site. The postholder must have business insurance on their policy.

The Pharmacy Technician will support the delivery of a comprehensive primary care medicines management system, primarily performing activities within practice and also flexible to wider network demands. Responsibilities include medicines supply, actioning discharge summary medication changes, liaising with care homes regarding prescription queries and supporting the move towards online prescription services. Understanding of primary care operations and use of SystmOne would be an advantage but is not essential.

Responsibilities
  • Work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacists in the West Neighbourhood to deliver a comprehensive medicines management service, ensuring a safe and efficient service is maintained.
  • Deliver medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests.
  • Engage with pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals to conduct patient‑oriented medicines reviews for patients identified by the broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Act as a key member of the multidisciplinary and pharmacy teams, providing medicines management advice to healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Pharmacists to develop and conduct medicines management audits, support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions.
  • Role‑model compassionate and inclusive leadership, engaging, enabling and empowering others, using coaching to promote learning and quality improvement, and facilitating team working across organisational boundaries.
Qualifications / Professional Registration (Essential)
  • BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge (e.g., national certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences) or equivalent qualification.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.
  • Holding CPPE PCPEP qualification; if not held, completion within 24 months required.
  • An appropriate accredited technician checking qualification.
Experience and Knowledge (Essential)
  • Previous relevant experience working in pharmacy.
  • Knowledge or experience of coaching and mentoring practices and tools.
  • Knowledge or experience of quality improvement tools, techniques and methods.
  • Evidence of personal insight and sound judgement.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience working in primary care or with primary care teams.
  • Previous medicines management experience.
  • Audit experience.
Other Requirements (Essential)
  • Valid driving licence; must be either a car owner able to use the car for work purposes or have a Trust personal lease vehicle, with reasonable adjustments considered for disabled candidates.
