Job description
The Role:

We are currently supporting a well-established organisation in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, who are seeking an experienced Payroll & Accounts Assistant to join their finance team on a maternity-cover contract. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong payroll and management accounts experience who thrives in a busy, deadline-driven environment.

As the Payroll & Accounts Assistant, you will play a key role in delivering accurate payroll, VAT reporting, month-end duties and banking tasks. Working closely with internal teams, you will be joining a supportive, professional finance function where your contribution will be genuinely valued. This Payroll & Accounts Assistant role is offered on a hybrid basis—3 days in the office and 2 from home, working 08:30-17:00, Monday to Friday.

Main Responsibilities:
  • End-to-end preparation of payroll for 250+ employees
  • Processing monthly overtime and holiday pay calculations
  • Working closely with HR and an external payroll provider to ensure payroll accuracy
  • Preparing and posting month-end journals and accruals
  • Completing balance sheet reconciliations and resolving discrepancies
  • Posting intercompany recharges
  • Supporting payment runs, bank posting and bank reconciliations
  • Managing expense system users, training and payment runs
  • Preparing VAT reports and contributing to annual PSA & P11D work
Skills / Experience:
  • AAT qualified or equivalent
  • Proven experience in payroll processing
  • Strong understanding of management accounts
  • Advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, data analysis)
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage tight month-end deadlines
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Salary & Working Hours:
  • Competitive salary (DOE)
  • 08:30 - 17:00, Monday to Friday
  • Hybrid working: 3 days office / 2 days home
