Overview
Paediatric lead clinical physiologist/scientist – B8a. An exciting opportunity within the Paediatric Respiratory Physiology service at St George’s Hospital for a skilled and enthusiastic Lead Clinical Physiologist/Scientist. The paediatric physiology service performs full pulmonary function testing, step tests and sleep studies, including pulse oximetry, transcutaneous CO2 monitoring and polygraphy studies, in outpatient clinics and inpatient settings. The successful candidate will be an experienced, friendly and highly motivated person with leadership and management skills, and will act as the lead educator with a passion for teaching and education.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Manage the paediatric respiratory physiology department with day-to-day responsibility to ensure high quality test results and safety of staff and patients.
- Have specialist knowledge in respiratory physiology (respiratory, sleep medicine and NIV).
- Develop and improve clinical service provision alongside the consultant clinical scientist.
- Undertake highly complex procedures in sleep and pulmonary function testing and provide reporting.
- Teach respiratory physiology to students (STP training officer), nurses and members of the lay public.
- Engage in scientific research related to sleep and pulmonary function testing.
- Provide on-site management of clinical staff for paediatric respiratory physiology investigations and treatment.
- Act as authorised signatory with understanding of funding and budgets.
- Demonstrate flexibility to match clinical needs, including on-site and cross-site working.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Corporate management of the paediatric respiratory physiology services at St George’s Hospital.
- Participate in care group and clinical governance meetings; contribute to wider respiratory service development.
- Review and develop protocols for additional services (e.g., dysfunctional breathing clinics) aligned with department expansion.
- Manage the training programme for new staff, including targets and progression tracking.
- Provide advanced teaching locally and nationally to STP students, medical and nursing students.
- Carry out HR procedures in line with Trust policy (performance reviews, attendance, recruitment).
- Lead sickness staging reviews and HR follow-ups.
- Ensure calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, quality assurance and infection control of pulmonary function and sleep equipment; liaise with suppliers for repairs and assess patient risk where equipment is unavailable.
- Proactively address daily challenges and pursue departmental improvement.
- Act as local work-based assessor for trainee Healthcare Scientists and Clinical Physiologists (NSHCS schemes).
- Utilise complex software for sleep studies, CPAP monitoring, data analysis and reporting; generate reports as required.
- Manage data systems and backups for sleep diagnostics and pulmonary function testing within the Information Governance Framework.
Organisational Responsibilities
- Implement local and national policies and guidelines for best practice in measurement, assessment and therapeutic applications; align with department developments.
- Develop and implement new ways of working to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Propose and implement new policies and service provisions across the paediatric respiratory physiology services.
- Plan day-to-day activities for staff and service provision.
- Liaise with reception to ensure smooth service delivery; maintain up-to-date information on Trust/databases for audit and research.
- Lead research and audit studies; ensure completion and display of audits in the waiting area.
Environmental Responsibilities

- Maintain professional conduct and confidentiality; follow health and safety, fire and handling procedures.
- Review department compliance with health and safety, COSHH, and fire provisions; ensure ongoing adherence.
Educational Responsibilities
- Lead education for adults and paediatric respiratory physiology; run monthly sessions, chair education meetings, and plan ongoing staff education with the team.
- Coordinate placements for Healthcare Science degree students and STPs; liaise with other trusts and departments.
- Undertake statutory training and education programs; pursue personal development as per knowledge and skills framework.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and training as required.
