Job description

Overview

Two full-time Consultant Orthodontist roles at UHMB to join our busy Orthodontic team. Posts attract 10 PA's in total; there may be an honorary teaching position with UCLan for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The post will be based in Lancaster at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but will also involve clinical activity at other sites within the Trust. The job plan will be negotiable.

Role and responsibilities

The maxillofacial unit provides teaching for UCLan students based at the Morecambe Dental Education Centre and has close links with UCLan School of Dentistry in Preston. The team recently welcomed Honorary Consultants in Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Periodontics, based at UCLAN, with scope for further development. There are offices, secretarial and computer facilities on all sites, an electronic EPR and PACs system for radiography and digital photography across the Bay. A fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory with high quality technical support is based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

You should be fully registered with the General Dental Council with a licence to practice and on the specialist list for Orthodontics. You should have successfully completed, or be within 6 months of an SAC approved training in Orthodontics or equivalent at the time of interview.

Hospital sites

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, with community premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. FGH and RLI have a range of General Hospital services with ED, critical/coronary care units and consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of general hospital services, plus an Urgent Treatment Centre. All three main hospitals provide planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery, with additional outreach services from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Unit and teaching

The Unit provides a comprehensive secondary care service in all aspects of Orthodontics including management of hypodontia and patients requiring orthognathic surgery in conjunction with the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry teams. There is an active orthodontic Managed Clinical Network including local acute Trusts and specialist practitioners across Lancashire & South Cumbria. The unit consists of 1 Consultant Orthodontist, 1 Apprentice Orthodontic Therapist and an overseas MTI Specialist Orthodontic Trainee.
