We are seeking an Optical Engineer/Scientist to join our Spectacles team. In this role, you will:

  1. Utilize in-house optical design tools for developing new AR displays.
  2. Support the creation of novel optical design software for analyzing advanced systems.
  3. Contribute to designing AR waveguides for high-volume, low-cost production.
  4. Develop optical structures to improve AR waveguide performance.
  5. Incorporate data from physical measurements into models.
  6. Collaborate with engineering teams to implement waveguide designs.
  7. Create detailed design models and documentation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Physics-based design and optimization experience.
  • Proficiency in Python for computation and optimization (e.g., scipy, scikit-optimize, jax).
  • Experience scripting with simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical, MEEP).
  • Strong organization and planning skills for high-risk R&D projects.
  • Ability to deliver on short timelines.
  • Excellent communication and reasoning skills.
  • Team-oriented with a proactive attitude.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
  • Relevant industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Git codebases.
  • Knowledge of optical modelling techniques (FDTD, RCWA/FMM).
  • Understanding of optical raytracing, polarization analysis, and optics fundamentals.
  • Background in optical metrology and nanophotonics manufacturing techniques.
