Job summary

A leading marine engineering firm in Portsmouth is seeking an experienced Naval Architect to enhance their innovative team. The role covers analysis of ship performance and support for hydrodynamic sea trials. Candidates should possess a degree in Naval Architecture and demonstrable experience in modelling and hydrodynamics. This is a permanent position offering a hybrid working model with at least one day on-site each week.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis and evaluation of ship platforms' manoeuvring performance.

Overview

Our client, an established marine engineering firm, require an experienced Naval Architect to join their multi-disciplined team. Within the Vehicle Control team, you will be working alongside a team of experts within Naval Architecture and the Whole Boat Design Team in one of the largest and fastest growing Naval Architecture Departments in the UK. Positions are available from Senior to Principal level.

Location: Portsmouth - Hybrid - Minimum 1 day per week on-site

Role Type: Permanent

Note: Please note we can only consider sole UK Nationals (no dual nationalities).

What the role of the Naval Architect entails

Some of the main duties of the Naval Architect will include:

  • Conducting analysis and evaluation of ship platforms manoeuvring performance from concept design to in-service support
  • Undertaking development, verification and validation of mathematical manoeuvring model using physical model test data
  • Generation of Safe Manoeuvring Envelopes and supporting associated operator guidance
  • You will be working with enterprise partners to develop the modelling capability, processes and toolsets for use to support our major programmes
  • Working collaboratively with other naval architecture teams, systems teams, Active Vehicle Control system teams and propulsion engineers as well as customers and suppliers to deliver innovative & safe vessel solutions
  • Supporting & conducting hydrodynamic sea trials such as depth and heading control, including test form development and post-trial data analysis
What experience you need to be the successful Naval Architect
  • Experience in the generation of ship or submarine manoeuvring modelling
  • Advanced numeracy and analytical skills
  • A strong understanding of hydrodynamic principles and methods
  • Degree in Naval Architecture, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent experience
  • Hydrodynamic/aerodynamic design and evaluation experience
  • Physical testing experience
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards/ability to achieve
