Job description
Overview

The Musculoskeletal (MSK) service provides assessment and treatment for people with musculoskeletal or orthopaedic conditions across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG). The service includes First Contact Physiotherapists in several primary care networks, physiotherapy, podiatry, and the MSK Interface Service (MSKI). Our aim is to deliver timely, high-quality care, with clinicians including physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthotists, and GPs. The MSKI service acts as a specialist interface clinic between primary and secondary care, providing expert assessment and management plans for patients who would previously have been referred to secondary care. It also offers advice and guidance to primary care and community services, supporting pathway developments to improve patient experience and service efficiency. The service operates from multiple sites: 3 in South Gloucestershire, 11 in Bristol, and 3 in North Somerset. MSKI Physiotherapists may deliver clinics Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm (excluding bank holidays), with potential weekend clinics to improve access. Within Sirona, physiotherapists are designated as 'MSK Interface Physiotherapist' or 'Advanced MSKI Physiotherapist.' This role refers to an MSKI Physiotherapist, band 7 on the Agenda for Change pay scale.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct advanced assessment, differential diagnosis, and care planning.
  • Request and interpret diagnostic investigations (e.g., blood tests, imaging, diagnostic injections).
  • Deliver injection therapy where appropriate, using current evidence to guide decisions.
  • Advise patients on surgical and non-surgical management options across MSK pathways (orthopaedics, neurosurgery, neurology, rheumatology, pain, community services).
  • Support patients with persistent pain and chronic conditions, promoting self-management and behaviour change.
  • Provide specialist education, mentoring, and support for colleagues across MSK services.
  • Contribute to audits, service evaluation, and pathway development to improve patient care.
  • Engage with MSKI networks to share evidence and best practice.
  • Deputise for the Advanced MSKI Physiotherapist as required.
  • This role requires high-level clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, and a commitment to collaborative, patient-centred care.
