Overview
The MRI department at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundations Trust provides a wide range of high‑quality imaging for the local community and the wider population in East Kent. Our static MRI services are based at The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, and the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital at Margate. The service is extended to community diagnostic centres and mobile scanners across the east Kent region. Our state‑of‑the‑art imaging equipment, combined with a highly skilled and motivated group of radiographers and enhanced practitioners, allows us to offer career progression opportunities within clinical and management roles in radiology.
Responsibilities
- Perform a range of MRI procedures, including complex clinical cases, and manage patient priority as appropriate.
- Assist and supervise junior staff, students and other trainees visiting the department and act as the authorised person in the MRI department in line with MHRA guidelines.
- Work without director supervision or support in out‑of‑hours service and support mobile scanners as necessary to support the service.
- Take responsibility for MRI safety screening and ensure all patients are safety checked and suitable for MRI scan.
- Manage workflow and ensure all data inputs are recorded for patient record integrity and statistical evaluation purposes.
- Promote the highest professional and technical standards in the department using personal example.
- Demonstrate partnership in professional development issues and maintain a high level of technical and theoretical skills through personal CPD.
- Participate in the governance of the department in areas including risk management, health and safety, research and audit activities.
- Supervise and support junior staff and promote maintenance of an efficient, effective and high‑quality service for all users.
- Actively promote and participate in clinical audit.
- Ensure the safety of self, staff and service users with regard to the use of ionising radiations in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and local rules of the radiological safety committee.
- Produce high‑quality images which are accurately labelled and appropriate for the indicated pathology.
- Take part in the appraisal process and complete mandatory training and competency to use the required equipment.
- Develop expertise and practical competence within MRI, which may involve post‑graduate study.
- Communicate information and instructions to patients and their relatives to undertake radiographic examinations effectively, especially where there are significant barriers to understanding.
- Report any operational problems, deal with room breakdowns and accidents, completing all relevant paperwork.
- Adhere to and apply all relevant health and safety legislation and guidance, and maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with patients, staff and other health service business information in accordance with Trust policy and data protection legislation.
Qualifications
Applicants should be experienced senior MRI radiographers with a proven track record of clinical competency. They must have completed clinical competency training and all required inductions, and be competent in managing complex MRI procedures, supervising junior staff, and adhering to national policies and MHRA guidelines. Candidates should demonstrate ongoing professional development through CPD, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work independently in a high‑pressure environment while maintaining strict safety and quality standards.
