Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to support the Moving & Handling Practitioner. You will have a recognised qualification in Moving and Handling, organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Moving and Handling is about providing safe Moving and Handling techniques so far as is reasonably practicable, for employees, and patients.
Subject Matter expert in service of moving and handling training, advice and support regarding moving and handling of people and objects within the workplace.
Please note - This role is not eligible for sponsorship unless you meet criteria by temporary exemption from current changes to immigration rules put in force on 22/07/2025. Separate provisions are applied to workers who have been sponsored and held continuously Skilled Worker visa since prior to 04/04/2024.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate training, provide advice, guidance and support to staff Trust wide on manual handling training and education issues.
- Support the provision and maintenance of small equipment across the organisation to support safe and effective patient care.
- To act as a role model for moving and handling and promote a culture of safety.
- Expected to show flexibility in working hours to meet the needs of the service.
- Provide a point of contact for all services Trustwide for advice, support and guidance regarding manual handling concerns or issues.
- Escalate any concerns raised by health care workers in regard to complex handling risk to the Manual Handling Practitioner.
- Assist in the development of moving and handling services and delivering exemplary clinical practice, contributing to the reduction of moving and handling incidents across the Trust and to patient and staff safety.
- Promote awareness of safer techniques and a positive safety culture that aids the reduction in musculoskeletal disorders arising from work related activities.
- Work with other stakeholders to play a key role in promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of employees and patients.
- Network with other Moving and Handling Professionals within the NHS and associated organisations by attendance at appropriate meetings, seminars and other events.
- Attending events associated with moving and handling, back care and ergonomics to ensure the Trust receives an up-to-date and professional service.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Qualified in Moving and Handling (recognised qualification).
- Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to deliver Moving and Handling training within a mock ward environment and within the workplace.
- Knowledge of current legislation, NHS Core Skills Framework and statutory requirements related to moving and handling, back care and ergonomics.
- Ability to instruct and train staff in the use of specialist moving and handling equipment, including area specific training.
- Experience in advising on body mechanics and safer moving and handling practices.
- Ability to create and maintain a suitable learning environment for multi-disciplinary staff training and to maintain training resources.
Training
- To assist with developing, facilitating and evaluating moving and handling, back care or ergonomics training programmes to ensure alignment with current legislation and best practice.
- To provide instruction and training for staff in the use of specialist moving and handling equipment, including area specific training, and involvement in specialist training such as spinal injuries and bariatric handling.
- To create a learning environment and develop appropriate learning methodologies to be inclusive for all learners.
- To maintain inventory of resources required for course delivery.
Health and Safety
- Perform workplace assessments, such as risk assessments, equipment assessments and competencies, to support the Manual Handling Practitioner with training needs analysis, incident action plans and staff health & wellbeing.
- Provide guidance and training to those responsible for undertaking local moving and handling risk assessments to reduce risks to staff, patients and others.
- To use professional experience and subject knowledge to advise clinical/non-clinical staff in appropriate techniques for the speciality/department.
Professional
- Be able to demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for moving and handling. It is essential that you are a good communicator and be physically fit enough to perform equipment demonstrations and manoeuvres.
