Job description

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Mobile Electrician in the West Midlands. The role will involve travel across the region visiting HMP Hewell and HMP Long Lartin. You will have access to a company van and fuel cad - giving you everything you need to travel between sites without the hassle.

The standard hours of work are 39 hours per week, 08.00 – 17.00 with an hour earlier finish every Friday. There is a need to work 1 in 3 weekends, but this would be on a rota basis (and with an additional allowance of 15% of basic salary), and part of an on-call rota.

At Amey, we’re supporting our justice client, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing them with safe, clean and efficient prisons. By using our facilities management expertise, we help keep 60 secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly.

The Mobile Electrician plays an important part in working in maintaining secure environments and supporting prison operations. You’ll tackle technical challenges, deliver mission‑critical services, and work alongside a team of expert engineers.

What you will do:
  • Manage and authorise high and low‑risk electrical maintenance activities across the FM estate, acting as Authorised Person/Responsible Person (AP/RP) in line with Amey Safety Rules. (Training will be provided.)
  • Deliver both planned and reactive ‘like for like’ electrical maintenance within prison environments, ensuring systems are safe, compliant, and fully operational.
  • Carry out electrical inspection tests and install electrical equipment and wiring across multiple prison sites.
  • Diagnose faults, replace components, and resolve issues across a wide range of electrical systems.
  • Oversee and supervise Level 2 electrical work, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Consistently uphold Health & Safety standards, complete risk assessments, and follow safe systems of work.
  • Maintain the security of plant, tools, and materials, and ensure the safe use of vehicles when required.
  • Support with escorting duties and assist with other tasks as needed.
What you will bring:
  • Appropriate technical qualification e.g. City & Guilds 2365 parts 1-3, BTEC, NVQ level 3 or above
  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing
  • BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations, specifically 18th Edition*.
  • Ideally 3+ years as an electrician, with at least 2 years in test and inspection roles. Commercial/industrial experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience of Electrical Systems and Electricity at work Regulations.
  • Capable of working at heights.
  • Ability to work alone and use initiative.
  • Good all‑round project management knowledge.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), with a proficiency in IT.
  • Experience in managing stakeholder relationships at all levels IT skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
