Job description
Medicines Information, Formulary and Clinical Trials Pharmacist

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic pharmacist to join our Medicines Use Support Team and drive our Medicines Information, Formulary and Clinical Trials services forward.

In this role, you will play a central role in managing the Trust Medicines Formulary, coordinating the Drug & Therapeutics Committee business and agenda, and providing high-level, evidence-based medicines evaluation and advice to patients, healthcare professionals and trust/regional groups. You will also oversee and support the delivery of clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMP) and manage the Medicines Information Service.

This post is ideally suited to a dynamic pharmacist with strong organisational and interpersonal skills, a proactive and solution-focused approach, and a desire to develop their leadership capabilities while influencing practice and driving service improvement and change.

You will be part of a supportive team that works closely with other pharmacy and multi-disciplinary teams across the Trust and wider region. This collaboration will be key for your successful journey at Whittington Health.

Main duties of the job
  • Manage the Medicines Information service.
  • Provide evidence-based medicines advice and information using expert knowledge and experience to pharmacy, nursing, medical and other healthcare professionals on the care and treatment of patients, inside and outside the Trust.
  • Manage the work of rotational pharmacy staff in MI and provide training in all aspects of medicines information.
  • Organise and coordinate the Drug and Therapeutics Committee (D&TC) business and agenda.
  • Support a structured entry of new medicines into the Trust formulary ensuring full alignment to D&TC and North Central London Joint Formulary Committee (NCL JFC) processes
  • Lead the review, update and maintenance of the Trust Formulary to promote effective prescribing within the trust.
  • Attend and actively participate in relevant meetings within the NCL Medicines Optimisation Network, including the NCL JFC, Formulary Pharmacists Group, NICE TA Implementation Group, NCL Shared Care Group, among others.
  • Lead on clinical trials at Whittington Health.
  • Oversee the implementation and delivery of Clinical Trials (CTIMP) from a Pharmacy perspective.
  • Liaise with Research & Development team, medical staff and representatives of clinical trials sponsors on the arrangements for the delivery of clinical trials.
  • Provide training to on-call pharmacists and monitor quality of on-call service.

Education/Qualifications
  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification to at least diploma level or equivalent experience through relevant short courses
  • Postgraduate qualifications to Masters or PhD level
Skills and Abilities
  • Accurate dispensing, checking, and prescription monitoring skills, and ability to follow written procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to communicate with patients and all grades of healthcare staff (verbally and in writing)
  • Experience of supervising and training junior pharmacists, technical, and ancillary staff.
  • Ability to assimilate, analyse and interpret financial and clinical data
  • Good inter-personal skills; confident & assertive when dealing with other professionals
  • Ability to manage and work within resources and to tight deadlines
  • Competent in the use of computers and familiar with hospital pharmacy computer systems
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, in a pharmacy and multidisciplinary environment
  • Proven project/ practice research / audit skills
  • Ability to contribute to planning of service developments, and to manage change
Knowledge and Experience
  • 3 years post-registration experience within a hospital pharmacy
