The Medication Aide/Caregiver is responsible for distributing medications and treatments to our residents. This position also performs the general duties and responsibilities of the household caregiver. The medication aide provides medical and physical care to the residents of the household to meet their daily needs and enable them to function at the highest possible level. This role is the residents' closest advocate in the household. As a caregiver, this role would promote the resident's psychosocial well-being through meaningful relationship building and works with the household team to meet other social service needs of the resident and the household. In this role, one would provide support, friendship and kindness for each of the household members. This role plans and facilitates social activities for residents of the household which provide meaningful ways to spend time as recreation, exercise, relationship building and fun. This role also supports the household homemaker in maintaining a clean safe household environment and in caring for the residents’ personal laundry.

Qualifications

Expectations

Primary Caregiver: Respects the resident’s room as home and assists the resident in feeling in charge of everything that happens within. Supports residents in self-care and provides care as necessary for those unable to care for their own needs (grooming, hygiene, dining and nutritional needs, mobility, elimination, psychosocial and safety needs). Assists residents in all activities of daily living and independent activities. Responds to all resident requests for assistance and/or call bells in the household. Observes residents closely, identifying changing needs and conditions at first indication and reports immediately to household or nursing leadership as appropriate. Communicates and documents services provided to the resident. Recommends changes in the appropriate sections of the resident’s support/service plan.

Medication Administration: Accurately and safely prepares, administers and documents the administration of all medications and treatments. Continually honors person-centered and resident-directed care. Ensures that all medications and treatments are administered in a manner supporting resident direction, choice and dignity. Observes residents closely for needs, changes in condition, refusal or reaction to medications and immediately reports to licensed nursing staff. Performs basic care procedures to include catheter, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight, specimen collections, colostomy care, oxygen maintenance, and other special care.

Life Enhancement (Social Service and Activities): Continually seeks opportunities to meet resident’s psychosocial needs through planned and spontaneous actions. Provides ongoing support, friendship and kindness to all household members. Plans and organizes social activities the household which includes making any necessary arrangements. Leads and participates in learning circles with residents and staff in the household. Informs residents of activities. Maintains appropriate documentation in support of social service and activities functions in the household. Assists with transportation of residents to outside appointments and accompanies resident as assigned.

Meals: May assist with mealtimes.

Housekeeping: Maintains clean spaces in the household (resident rooms, common spaces and equipment). Maintains supply of all materials required to meet resident needs. Supports all aspects of the household environment (pets, plants, children, visitors and guests, facilitating all planned and spontaneous needs and activities). Coordinates work with the household homemaker to ensure the housekeeping needs of the household are met.

Laundry: Assists residents as needed to wash, mend, iron, fold and sort residents’ personal laundry. Supports residents in self-care and provides assistance to ensure residents’ personal laundry needs are met.
