Job description

The Hewitt Fertility Centre is seeking to appoint a medical laboratory assistant to join our highly skilled and dedicated team of 35 scientists. We are dedicated to providing the very best in patient care and offer a full range of laboratory therapeutic and diagnostic treatments. The Hewitt Fertility Centre offers as standard the latest time-lapse technologies for all patients in our state‑of‑the‑art laboratories.

The successful applicant will be a key member of the scientific team providing support to the scientists in both an administrative and clinical setting. They will assist in the preparation and set up of treatment cycles for couples undergoing IVF treatment, maintain cleanliness in our laboratories and monitor equipment and stock levels. They must be personable, have excellent communication skills, and be able to deal with patients directly and liaise effectively with colleagues. Being a team‑player and close attention to detail are the key required attributes for this role.

Responsibilities
  • Assist and provide administrative support to the Clinical Embryologists in the provision of clinical embryology services.
  • Undertake formal witnessing of procedures as required by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
  • Ensure that the scientific laboratories are maintained to the highest degree of cleanliness and tidiness.
  • Perform a daily audit of all equipment to ensure that they are functioning correctly and within critical parameters.
  • Assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and cleaning of the embryology and andrology laboratories.
  • Assist with preparation and setting up for treatment cycles.
  • Perform stock and consumable checks within the scientific laboratories ensuring that the embryology laboratories are fully stocked.
  • Monitor and maintain the liquid nitrogen storage facilities.
  • Receive, and appropriately direct, testicular biopsies (procured off‑site) from patients attending the Hewitt Fertility Centres.
  • Liaise directly and by telephone with the Clinical Embryologists, other members of the Hewitt Fertility Centre staff and other hospital staff ensuring that information is conveyed to colleagues accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide the highest possible standard of patient care.
  • Work flexibly and perform tasks as and when necessary including out of ‘normal working hours’ and participate in a weekend rota.
  • Be proficient and use the computer database systems used by the Hewitt Fertility Centre.
  • Carry out required administrative duties associated with the embryology laboratory.
  • Assist in the audit requirements of the Embryology Laboratory.
  • Follow procedures, standards and protocols to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes and to ensure that procedures are performed effectively and to the highest possible standard, paying meticulous attention to detail.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990) and the Code of Practice issued by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority.
  • Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post.
