Contract: Initial 6 month contract with a view to extend to 18 months

Base Salary: £60k (Dependent on experience)

Payment Type: PAYE

Hours: 08.00 – 17.30 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Start Date: ASAP

Location: We require you to work on one of the following 4 onshore Royal Navy / Marine bases across Great Britain:

  • England - Gosport (HMS Sultan)
  • England – Exmouth (CTCRM Lympstone)
  • Scotland - Rosyth (HMS Caledonia)
  • Wales - Cardiff (HMS Cambria)

Position Overview

Pertemps Medical is going through an exciting period of growth and change. We are seeking to add to our brilliant team.

Purpose of the Job

The Military Medical Examiner is responsible for the safe, effective and timely delivery of medical assessments on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) - for new recruits to the Royal Navy, the Marines to come to conclusion as to their suitability to be invited into the training program.

This involves adopting a holistic medical approach for overall health, and any key factors for further review as highlighted by a senior doctor’s pre-assessment of a candidate’s primary care notes.

Full training is given in this process and reference material is provided to support the clinicians.

General duties
  • To keep up to date with all required training needs and good practice commensurate with the role
  • Pre-screening of the full GP record of Navy/ Marine applicants to look for any medical issues that might be a bar to entry in to the Navy/Marines.
  • Pre-joining fitness assessments for Marines
  • Meeting with candidates face-to-face to get more details on those conditions and check what impact they now have
  • Full body examinations (no PR genitalia or breasts)
  • Make a decision on their fitness to enter, or for more complex candidates, refer to the Senior Navy doctors for further review.
  • Once a decision is reached completing the right forms and informing the applicants
  • Attending occupational health meetings if necessary to discuss and review cases
  • Ensuring proper and robust record-keeping is essential.
  • To safeguard candidate welfare by ensuring the highest standards of medical practice are maintained.
  • To be present/onsite when delivering this role
  • To declare any conflicts of interest.
  • To undertake any further activities as required consistent with the aims and objectives of the organisation.
Requirements
  • Full Registration with the GMC and record of Continuous Professional Development
  • Full participation in the appraisal and revalidation as required by the GMC
  • Good organisational and communication skills in Principal Duties and Responsibilities.
  • Team player able to work alongside the clinical team (i.e. Navy personnel, GP’s, HCA’s)
  • Manage and resolve clinical queries from front-line clinicians by working collaboratively.
  • Appropriately discuss or refer matters that may need further input or sign-off by the GP Site Lead or Candidate Processing Centre MOD personnel.
  • Responsible for the early identification of clinical concerns / escalations and taking the appropriate steps to gather information and undertake any required action.
