RHC Lifting, part of the WH Scott Group, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our experienced engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the design and development of bespoke lifting equipment, supporting projects from concept through to manufacture. You will play a key role in delivering safe, innovative, and high-quality lifting solutions for a wide range of industries.

To work in the technical design team for the realisation of gantry cranes, overhead cranes, and bespoke lifting solutions. The Mechanical Design Engineer works closely with project managers, structural engineers, and the wider project delivery team to ensure each solution meets client needs, technical standards, and manufacturing constraints.

Key Duties
Design, Leadership and Delivery
  • Preparation of detailed 2D and 3D CAD designs and manufacturing drawings for cranes, lifting beams, hoists, and structural components.
  • Coordinate the design effort across internal designers and the lead design office, allocating tasks and providing technical guidance.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant engineering standards, regulations (including LOLER), and project specifications.
  • Perform engineering calculations – e.g. load, stress, and deflection checks – to ensure structural safety and design integrity.
  • Participate in internal and client design reviews, presenting and justifying technical decisions.
Project and Resource Coordination
  • Manage your own design workload across quotation and live project stages using the central design tracker with key internal stakeholders.
  • Engage proactively with external stakeholders to ensure product realisation and design principles are administered and informed correctly.
  • Provide clear, accurate updates on progress and expected completion dates to project owners, commercial leads, and clients.
  • Ensure designs are completed on time, within scope, and within the allocated design budget.
  • Support the identification and capture of variations and additional works through the design phase.
Documentation and Compliance
  • Provide and maintain all required design documentation, including design reports, technical files, and UKCA / CE documentation to Quality Engineer.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, compliance reviews, and other assurance documents.
  • Ensure technical files and calculations support warranty, traceability, and client documentation requirements.
Cross‑functional Support
  • Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, and commissioning – including remote support and site visits where required.
  • Liaise with structural engineers, manufacturing teams, and project stakeholders to align on design feasibility and delivery constraints.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and act as technical representative in client‑facing meetings as required.
Process and Continuous Improvement
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of design templates, calculation tools, standard parts libraries, and engineering processes.
  • Mentor colleagues and the wider team.
