Overview
Our client are a highly reputable, long standing manufacturing company, based in Southend on Sea, Essex. They are recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to assist with the team in gaining a working understanding of engineering principles, empowering the team with greater knowledge and understanding.
Daily tasks
- Designing for various manufacturing processes including machining, extrusions, injection moulding, sheet metal work, 3D printing, stamping etc.
- Hands‑on prototyping, testing, and refining using rapid prototype technologies.
- Ongoing revision of existing designs, cost engineering and improving manufacturability.
- Mechanical concept design for HiFi and non‑HiFi products.
- Using SolidWorks for 3D modelling, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawing creation with tolerancing.
- Component sourcing and purchasing, working closely with Design, Supplier and Parts coordinators to achieve desired parts while maintaining good working relationships.
- Sharing knowledge with junior team members to support their progression and development in mechanical design.
- Where necessary, visiting suppliers/sub‑contractors to communicate designs and prove manufacturability.
- Research and development of new and existing technologies for manufacturing key components required for all products.
- Design of machinery, jigs, and fixtures directly or indirectly through the production process engineer or in combination with current employees.
- Responsible for contributing to the company’s technical drawing abilities, including the transition of all outstanding historic drawings with tolerances into CAD format and PDM filing/library.
- Keeping the SolidWorks/PDM filing system updated and current with the design team.
- Help with planning timelines and setting realistic goals for the mechanical design element of projects.
- Responsible for clear communication and updates with the design coordinator regarding all ongoing project progress and timelines.
Requirements
- Natural understanding of mechanical design.
- Strong sketching and communication skills.
- Understanding of engineering principles.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to solve mechanical design problems and introduce solutions.
- Computer literate.
- Proficient in SolidWorks or similar 3D design packages.
- Be able to work from own initiative.
- Planning and time management, and working on several projects at the same time.
Standard Hours – 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Daily 37.5 hrs per week.
Salary up to £40,000 per annum. Includes an annual profit‑related discretionary bonus and free lunch daily.
