Maintenance Shift Technician – Mechanical Bias Position
To work as part of an in‑house maintenance shift team to provide a total planned and reactive maintenance service for the Trust. The role requires you to deliver a Trust‑wide service in accordance with the duties and responsibilities below.
Shift Pattern
2 on – 3 off – 2 on rotating shift pattern days/nights (37.5 h over a 4‑week period). Perform unsupervised work including demanding or non‑routine activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Test and fault‑find all engineering plant and equipment throughout the hospital, out of hours and unsupervised.
- Act as the 'Competent & Appointed Person' for the Trust for safe operation and maintenance of boilers and other plant and systems.
- Work independently to undertake maintenance and repairs as directed, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
- Carry Trust communication devices (pager, two‑way radio, mobile phone) at all times to enable immediate response to emergency situations.
- Provide a first line of response to maintain the delivery of clinical services; undertake 'first‑time fix' or temporary measures to avoid clinical capacity disruption.
- Respond to urgent situations such as lift entrapment, fire alarm calls, etc.
- Issue permits to work for directly employed staff and contractors.
- Supervise contractors on site during out‑of‑normal working hours.
- Organise and prioritise own day‑to‑day duties to ensure safe, efficient operation of plant.
- Diagnose and repair faults in engineering/electrical/plumbing installations, plant and equipment; pass on knowledge to others.
- Inform the appropriate Estates Manager/Officer/Team Leader of faults and breakdowns within and outside normal working hours.
- Prioritise all emergency and non‑emergency out‑of‑hours calls to ensure safety of staff, patients and visitors and to provide an effective service.
- Carry out PPM and reactive work site‑wide as required.
- Maintain records for all major repairs completed and logbooks, including works orders and defect reporting with clear, concise logging.
- Carry out building surveys and inspections as required.
- Advise on material, equipment, and systems.
- Maintain building and site service records.
- Highlight Health & Safety issues regarding building, mechanical control and electrical issues.
- Carry out investigation and testing on fire alarm and security systems.
- Liaise with external contractors and suppliers where necessary.
- Support company projects as and when required.
- Be part of a shift rota (4 on, 4 off – days and nights).
- Supervise maintenance assistants, apprentices, contractors and provide practical training.
- Perform any other duties as required by the Company.

- Follow policies and procedures and work collaboratively as part of an integrated team.

Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources
- Purchase parts to carry out day‑to‑day maintenance functions.
- Take reasonable care of Trust assets and minimise financial loss via cost‑efficient repair and maintenance of building services and equipment.
- Personal duty of care for all equipment and resources provided (e.g., works vehicle).
Responsibility for Staff
- Provide practical training, instruction and professional advice as necessary.
- Serve as a mentor / trainer for new staff.
- Supervise maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors and evaluate works carried out.
Responsibility for Information
- Comply with Health & Safety Regulations, NHS Regulations, HTM, HMO guidelines and customer requirements.
- Complete CAFM system and update maintenance records.
Research and Development
- Carry out audits and surveys as and when required.
Physical Effort
- Use Trust mobile phone, pager and radio extensively.
- Lift in excess of 15 kg on a daily basis numerous times during a shift.
- Input data to works management system.
- Work as part of shift rota (4 on, 4 off days and nights).
Mental Effort
- Maintain high levels of concentration for prolonged periods and respond to frequent interruptions such as fire alarms.
- Undergo continuous training and retain information.

Qualifications and Experience
- City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrical and/or Mechanical Services or NVQ Level 3.
- Previous experience in a multi‑skilled maintenance position with a core skill in either Electrical or Mechanical Services.
- Previous experience in a Competent Person (CP) role (e.g., Low Voltage CP, Medical Gases CP, HVAC CP).
- Previous experience in a shift technician role in a complex environment (e.g., healthcare).
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team, good problem‑solving skills, and assist with emergency tasks (fire alarms, heating failures, blocked drains, gritting of roads).
- Physically fit; lift and carry as required; excellent customer service skills; friendly and approachable.
