Job summary

A healthcare provider in Coventry is seeking a Maintenance Shift Technician with a mechanical bias to join their in-house maintenance team. This role involves providing planned and reactive maintenance while working a shift pattern of 2 on, 3 off, and being responsible for fault-finding and repairs across the Trust. The ideal candidate should have a City & Guilds Level 3 qualification in Electrical and/or Mechanical Services and experience in a healthcare environment, capable of maintaining safety standards and efficient operations.

Job description
Maintenance Shift Technician – Mechanical Bias Position

To work as part of an in‑house maintenance shift team to provide a total planned and reactive maintenance service for the Trust. The role requires you to deliver a Trust‑wide service in accordance with the duties and responsibilities below.

Shift Pattern

2 on – 3 off – 2 on rotating shift pattern days/nights (37.5 h over a 4‑week period). Perform unsupervised work including demanding or non‑routine activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test and fault‑find all engineering plant and equipment throughout the hospital, out of hours and unsupervised.
  • Act as the 'Competent & Appointed Person' for the Trust for safe operation and maintenance of boilers and other plant and systems.
  • Work independently to undertake maintenance and repairs as directed, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
  • Carry Trust communication devices (pager, two‑way radio, mobile phone) at all times to enable immediate response to emergency situations.
  • Provide a first line of response to maintain the delivery of clinical services; undertake 'first‑time fix' or temporary measures to avoid clinical capacity disruption.
  • Respond to urgent situations such as lift entrapment, fire alarm calls, etc.
  • Issue permits to work for directly employed staff and contractors.
  • Supervise contractors on site during out‑of‑normal working hours.
  • Organise and prioritise own day‑to‑day duties to ensure safe, efficient operation of plant.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in engineering/electrical/plumbing installations, plant and equipment; pass on knowledge to others.
  • Inform the appropriate Estates Manager/Officer/Team Leader of faults and breakdowns within and outside normal working hours.
  • Prioritise all emergency and non‑emergency out‑of‑hours calls to ensure safety of staff, patients and visitors and to provide an effective service.
  • Carry out PPM and reactive work site‑wide as required.
  • Maintain records for all major repairs completed and logbooks, including works orders and defect reporting with clear, concise logging.
  • Carry out building surveys and inspections as required.
  • Advise on material, equipment, and systems.
  • Maintain building and site service records.
  • Highlight Health & Safety issues regarding building, mechanical control and electrical issues.
  • Carry out investigation and testing on fire alarm and security systems.
  • Liaise with external contractors and suppliers where necessary.
  • Support company projects as and when required.
  • Be part of a shift rota (4 on, 4 off – days and nights).
  • Supervise maintenance assistants, apprentices, contractors and provide practical training.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the Company.

  • Responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues in accordance with the Trust’s Health & Safety policy.
  • Anticipate and act on potential hazards by initiating remedial measures.
  • Comply with all regulations associated with the work being carried out.
  • Undertake any training deemed compulsory for the role.
  • Ensure the correct PPE is always worn.
Communication
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally; be electronically literate.
  • Communicate technical issues and safety requirements to other staff, patients and contractors.
  • Liaise closely with other departments and staff within the team.
  • Build relationships and support personnel across the Trust, including clinical staff, contractors, patients, clients, relatives and carers.

  • Work as an integral part of the Estates Maintenance Team, providing a comprehensive service.
  • Generate and promote solutions, make decisions and commitments within appropriate time frames.

Planning and Organisational Skills
  • Plan, prioritise and schedule own workload and work with minimal supervision.
  • Coordinate work of contractors and provide cover for other maintenance technicians during periods of absence.
Responsibility for Patients / Clients
  • Have patient and client interaction as part of daily duties; provide non‑clinical advice.
Policy and Service Responsibilities
  • Follow policies and procedures and work collaboratively as part of an integrated team.
  • Encourage suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Participate in both formal and informal training as necessary.
Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources
  • Purchase parts to carry out day‑to‑day maintenance functions.
  • Take reasonable care of Trust assets and minimise financial loss via cost‑efficient repair and maintenance of building services and equipment.
  • Personal duty of care for all equipment and resources provided (e.g., works vehicle).
Responsibility for Staff
  • Provide practical training, instruction and professional advice as necessary.
  • Serve as a mentor / trainer for new staff.
  • Supervise maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors and evaluate works carried out.
Responsibility for Information
  • Comply with Health & Safety Regulations, NHS Regulations, HTM, HMO guidelines and customer requirements.
  • Complete CAFM system and update maintenance records.
Research and Development
  • Carry out audits and surveys as and when required.
Physical Effort
  • Use Trust mobile phone, pager and radio extensively.
  • Lift in excess of 15 kg on a daily basis numerous times during a shift.
  • Input data to works management system.
  • Work as part of shift rota (4 on, 4 off days and nights).
Mental Effort
  • Maintain high levels of concentration for prolonged periods and respond to frequent interruptions such as fire alarms.
  • Undergo continuous training and retain information.
Emotional Effort
  • Show empathy towards service users.
  • Contact with staff and incidental contact with distressed or angry service users.

  • Flexible work and adapt to clinical environment.
  • Exposure to distressing circumstances (fighting, self‑harm, personal attacks).

  • Reduce environmental impact and comply with sustainability targets.
Qualifications and Experience
  • City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrical and/or Mechanical Services or NVQ Level 3.
  • Previous experience in a multi‑skilled maintenance position with a core skill in either Electrical or Mechanical Services.
  • Previous experience in a Competent Person (CP) role (e.g., Low Voltage CP, Medical Gases CP, HVAC CP).
  • Previous experience in a shift technician role in a complex environment (e.g., healthcare).
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team, good problem‑solving skills, and assist with emergency tasks (fire alarms, heating failures, blocked drains, gritting of roads).
  • Physically fit; lift and carry as required; excellent customer service skills; friendly and approachable.
