Job summary

A local engineering firm in Andover is seeking an experienced Machine Operator to set and operate specialist forming machines. This role involves ensuring quality production, maintaining equipment, and contributing to process improvements. Previous machining experience is required, along with GCSEs in Maths and English. Job description

Personnel Selection Recruitment is working alongside an established local engineering company based within Andover. This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody who would like to work within a steady and stable company, offering progression and growth opportunities for the right candidate. This is a standard day shift position, working Monday to Fridays, with early finishes on Friday afternoons. 39 hours a week. Although not guaranteed, overtime is occasionally available at an uplifted pay rate.

Job Purpose

With training on the company's specific forming machines, you will be required to set and operate. Achieving a quality approved product and meeting the correct machine efficiency in the main focus and goal. A forming machine is a specialist machine used to form various diameters and types of wire into a product required for the energy industry. This is a manual role as it requires you to change feed rolls, gears, sanding belts and setting up and running a specialist wire picking machines or hand work. This is a greasy, oily job and PPE will be provided.

Duties and key responsibilities
  • Set, run and monitor the machines/processes.
  • Know the manufacturing process in great detail, troubleshooting at an appropriate level and involving senior members of staff if/when they are not able to correct the problem.
  • Monitor and check the product quality, identify when the process is deviating from the norm and take action to correct it.
  • Keep equipment in good working order by performing regular inspection, cleaning, involving the maintenance department for servicing along with routine and preventative maintenance to make sure the machine or process never breaks down.
  • Practice good housekeeping – ensure the area is kept free from waste and/or hazards.
  • Pro-actively train others on machines/processes.
  • Strict discipline on keeping the machines operational as long as possible, e.g. not shutting down early to go on break/end of the day, being flexible on tea break timings to help run other machines.
  • Sustain rapid tool changes.
  • Play an active part in Continuous Improvement/Kaizen events and suggest new improved ways of working.
Experience / Skills Required
  • Previous machining experience working for an engineering company.
  • Technical training will be given on the job, the key attributes are willingness to lean flexibility and basic maths and English.
  • Ability to use a bar-code scanner.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to use measuring equipment (DTI and gauge blocks) and inspection jigs.
  • GCSE’s in Maths and English, or relevant NVQ’s.
  • An awareness of Health and Safety working around industrial engineering machines.
  • To be able to work as part of a team.
  • Communicate effectively across the work environment.
  • Work under time constraints and pressures.
