Job description
Vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

The Lung Cancer Screening Programme is designed to enable early detection of lung cancer, improving patient outcomes and saving lives. With approval from the National Screening Committee, the programme is set to be implemented nationwide by 2028/29.

The programme targets individuals aged 55–74 with a history of smoking who are registered with participating GP practices. Patients are assessed for lung cancer risk through telephone screening using an accredited risk assessment tool. Advanced systems are employed to identify high-risk individuals, who are then scheduled for low-dose CT scans, enabling early detection and better treatment options.

The LCS Nursing Manager & Responsible Assessor will work alongside and support our experienced LCSNM to oversee the effective management of the LCS nursing team and screening review meetings (SRM). You will have direct line management responsibility for our LCS nursing team.

Secondment will be considered for internal candidates. If you are successful after interview you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

  • Responsible for interdepartmental/organisational liaison with partners, activities including HR, complaints, appraisal, incident management, pathway management on a regular basis and ensuring patient flow within the set trajectories and targets.
  • Responsible for education and training provision of identified staff groups, within defined areas.
  • Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events.
  • As Responsible Assessor (RA) you are responsible for the leadership of the process to select and assess the individual cases for entry into the programme, the Lung Health Check (LHC) and any prior risk assessment for lung cancer.
  • Lead and chair meetings including the nursing & team meeting and quality assurance meetings, sharing key learnings and implementing necessary improvement.
  • Conduct clinical audits in accordance with LCS quality standards and focus on areas identified for improvement.
  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Contribute towards corporate and programme objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times and within the LCS protocol, quality standards and incident finding guidance.
  • Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high‑quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.
  • Undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient pathways; ensure recall patients are offered an appointment within the quality standard guidelines and that any incidental findings are dealt with through the correct and agreed process.
