Role Overview

The Transport Planner - Logistics Professional for the team is a critical role responsible and accountable for the efficient, safe, and compliant management of all transport logistics during the commissioning, warranty, modifications, and retrofit phases of our projects. This individual will be the primary point of contact for all transport-related inquiries, ensuring seamless movement of goods, equipment, and train components both domestically and internationally, with a specific focus on train movements within the UK.

This role requires a proactive, detail-oriented, and highly organised individual with a strong understanding of logistics operations, customs regulations, and UK rail transport protocols. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the team's operational success and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate daily transport requests for a diverse range of items, including spare parts, tools, equipment, and train components.

Plan and optimise transport routes, modes (road, air, sea, rail), and schedules to meet project deadlines and budget constraints.

Source, evaluate, and manage relationships with third-party logistics providers (3PLs) and freight forwarders, ensuring competitive pricing and service levels.

Oversee the end-to-end transport process, from booking and dispatch to delivery and customs clearance.

Ensure all transport activities comply with Siemens internal policies, national, and international regulations (e.g., Incoterms, dangerous goods regulations).

Liaise with Network Rail, train operating companies (TOCs), and other relevant authorities to obtain required permits, access, and slot bookings.

Ensure all train movements comply with UK rail safety standards and operational procedures.

Coordinate with internal engineering and project teams to align transport schedules with commissioning, testing, and modification activities.

Maintain accurate records of all train movements and associated documentation.

Prepare and manage all required documentation for international shipments, including customs declarations, commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin.

Ensure full compliance with import/export regulations, tariffs, and trade agreements for all relevant countries.

Act as a point of contact for customs brokers and authorities, resolving any issues that may arise during clearance.

Serve as the primary logistics contact for the team, providing regular updates on transport status and resolving queries.

Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Procurement, and other internal departments to understand transport needs and integrate logistics planning into overall project schedules.

Communicate effectively with external suppliers, carriers, and customers.

Provide clear and concise reporting on transport performance, costs, and key metrics, process invoices from logistics providers and ensure accurate cost allocation.

Knowledge & Experience Required

Proven experience (minimum 3-5 years) in a Transport Planner, Logistics Coordinator, or similar role within a complex, project-driven environment.

Demonstrable experience with both domestic and international freight forwarding desirable.

Specific experience and strong understanding of UK rail logistics and documentation for train movements.

Experience with customs procedures and export compliance.

Proficiency in using ERP systems (e.g., SAP) for logistics functions. Excellent command of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint). Knowledge of the rail industry and its specific logistical challenges.

Experience with project logistics for large-scale engineering or infrastructure projects.
