Job description
Overview

General Adult Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist position at Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health (linked with Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Mental Health Team). 10 PA post providing inpatient and community liaison leadership in an acute unit with two wards (Roman Ward for females, Lea Ward for males). 12 fixed term months to cover paternity leave.

The post aims to maintain strong links with the community team (IoD NMHT) with the post holder currently offering 2 sessions of clinical care in the community. The appointed consultant will provide clinical leadership and assume Responsible Clinician (RC) responsibilities for detained patients on leave and for patients subject to Community Treatment Orders, while working with colleagues serving the Stepney and Wapping area and the Tower Hamlets Early Intervention for Psychosis Services (THEIS).

Responsibilities
  • Provide consultant input to inpatient wards and the Neighbourhood Mental Health Team, including assessing and reviewing patients, devising management plans and providing clinical leadership.
  • Lead and assume Responsible Clinician status where applicable, including detained patients on leave and those under Community Treatment Orders; contribute to compliance with the Mental Health Act and CQC requirements.
  • Participate in assessment of referred patients and in drawing up care plans addressing psychiatric, physical and social needs; perform detailed psychiatric assessments and devise treatment plans (including pharmacological management) with delivery of evidence-based treatments.
  • Work within a recovery-focused approach, maintaining patient-centred planning and decision making; ensure effective communication with the patient’s care coordinator and GP; involve carers and other professionals in care reviews as indicated.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and provide leadership to the team; participate in reviews when required.
Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT)
  • Membership of the Royal College Of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with RCPsych Guidelines)
  • With or eligible for Approved Clinician status (MHA, 2007)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree in a relevant area

Knowledge

  • Experience of clinical work in General Adult Psychiatry at ST4-6 or Consultant level in the last three years
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology; strong understanding of the Mental Health Act; appreciation of social aspects relevant to psychiatry

Desirable

  • Previous experience on a general adult inpatient ward

Clinical Skills

  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership
  • Expertise in risk formulation and evidence-based interventions for psychosis, mood disorders and co-morbidities
  • Commitment to clinical governance
