About the Role

This post is based in the Dermatology department located in Arndale House, The Poynt, Luton (Luton and Dunstable University Hospital).

The post holder will play a full part in the work of the department and will be expected to provide leadership to maintain and develop Dermatology services.

The post holder will share equitable responsibilities with professional colleagues and will contribute to governance arrangements of the service line.

They will be expected to provide Dermatology cover for in‑patient referrals but there is no on‑call out‑of‑hour rota.

The post holder will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence, maintaining responsibility for patients in their care and the proper functioning of the department.

They will attend the Local Cancer Multidisciplinary Team meetings as a core member or cover as appropriate.

The post holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest in line with the departmental strategy to expand its range of specialist services, possibly including dermatological surgery, contact dermatitis or phototherapy.

The Locum Consultant will work with local managers, general practitioners and other medical and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service.

The appointee will take an active part in the clinical supervision of Specialist Registrars and in the supervision of medical students from UCLH who sit in clinics.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Trust.
  • Share the management of adult and paediatric patients with dermatology conditions referred to the Trust with colleagues in the Dermatology Directorate.
  • Supervise junior doctors and support Dermatology clinical nurse specialists.
  • Actively participate in both Directorate and Trust matters relating to Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Take responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Train and supervise junior medical staff and devote time for this activity on a regular basis in clinics and MDTs.
  • Carry out audit projects; may also undertake research.

Qualifications

  • Essential Relevant postgraduate qualification MRCP or equivalent.
  • Essential SCE Dermatology (required for applicants who trained post 2009).
  • Desirable MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research.
Registration
  • Essential Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice mandatory before employment).
  • Essential Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying).
Clinical Experience
  • Essential Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
  • Essential Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Dermatology.
  • Essential Competence in the management of acute and chronic skin disorders.
  • Essential Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work without direct supervision.
