Qualifications

  • Experience in an Engineering workshop environment.
  • Valid driving licence required.
  • Complementary transferable engineering skills.
  • Knowledge of Welding/fabrication processes.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and work in Imperial.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct boiler repairs including stay replacement and plate work.
  • Perform running maintenance and overhaul repairs.
  • Handle fabrication works using ARC and MIG welding.
  • Read and work from imperial drawings for repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Job Type

Permanent Full Time hours per week (with minutes paid break) - 5 days over 7. Regular weekend, evening and holiday working will be required.

Hours

Core working hours are 5 - 0, however a reasonable amount of flexibility is essential.

Overview

The Watercress Line a heritage steam railway operated by award-winning volunteers and supported by paid staff, bringing smiles to faces through the beautiful Hampshire countryside for years. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced Locomotive Boilersmith / Fitter to be part of a team to carry out the overhaul, restoration and maintenance of our running fleet of steam locomotives and diesel shunters.

Responsibilities
  • Boiler repairs, including stay replacement, plate work renewal, tubing, hot riveting
  • Undertake the running maintenance as well as overhaul repairs
  • Fabrication works - ARC and MIG welding, plasma cutting and oxy-propane cutting
  • Working to imperial drawings and existing or old components to undertake the repairs required
  • Removal and fitting of components
  • Maintaining a safe, clean and tidy work environment
  • Shunting & plant driving (not essential - training can be given if required)
  • Workshop & site improvements
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in an Engineering workshop environment
  • Driving licence
  • Complementary transferable engineering skills
  • Knowledge of Welding / fabrication
  • Ability to read an engineering drawing and work in Imperial

Desirable

  • Experience in driving or shunting railway yards

Candidates with the experience or relevant job titles of; Boilerhouse Mechanic, Boilermaker Fitter, Boilermaker I, Boilermaker II, or Heritage Engineering Steam (Boiler-smith) Technician, Mechanical Fitter, Carriage and Wagon Fitter, and Engineering Technician, may also be considered for this role.
