Legal Counsel

£46,000 - £55,000 + 20% Flexible Benefits Fund | Birmingham, Hybrid | Permanent

As Legal Counsel - Commercial, you will provide expert legal guidance on a wide range of matters including high‑value construction contracts, procurement activity, utilities agreements, local authority matters, IP, corporate issues, funding agreements and technology contracts. You’ll advise stakeholders at all levels, support dispute resolution processes, and ensure that legal risks are effectively managed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Draft and review complex commercial and contractual documentation with minimal supervision
  • Provide legal advice on procurement, construction, corporate, funding and commercial matters
  • Support the resolution of contractual claims and disputes, including working with external legal teams
  • Manage external legal support, including monitoring cost, scope and quality
  • Prepare reports, briefings, and recommendations for senior stakeholders
  • Maintain strong relationships across legal, commercial, procurement and government teams
  • Promote and embed Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in all work
Essential Skillset
  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister (England & Wales)
  • Strong experience in commercial, contract, procurement or construction law
  • Experience working on major projects, infrastructure, government, utilities or transport sectors
  • Ability to produce complex legal drafting independently
  • Skilled at influencing stakeholders and building strong working relationships
  • Confident in managing external legal advisers and associated budgets
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and organisational skills
  • Ability to balance multiple workstreams to tight deadlines
  • Experience of public sector procurement processes is highly desirable
