Job description

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is an employee-friendly NHS organisation with a multi-award-winning reputation. The primary focus of the role is the physical health needs of individuals with a learning disability. The post holder will be based and managed in Learning Disability services and will raise awareness, improve skills and provide training to service users, carers, paid staff and colleagues in primary care services and learning disability secondary care services to enable them to respond appropriately to the health needs of people with a learning disability.

The post holder will develop plans to ensure those with additional complex needs are enabled to access health promotion initiatives and health care effectively and appropriately. They will work in close collaboration with Public Health Wales, Health Champions and Primary Care to develop initiatives to identify and effectively respond to the health needs of people with a learning disability, with aims to improve health literacy, health outcomes and the experience of healthcare services for service users and their families and carers.

This post will comprise clinical and educational duties and will include jointly delivering training sessions with individuals with a learning disability. It is a fixed term/secondment until 31st March 2026 due to funding. If applying for the secondment, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying.

The post holder will play a key role in improving health outcomes for individuals with learning disabilities by:

  • Providing expert advice and consultancy to professionals across health and social care sectors.
  • Promoting effective communication with service users, families, and carers.
  • Leading initiatives to improve access to primary care and reduce health inequalities.
  • Supporting Primary Care services in identifying and maintaining records of individuals with learning disabilities.
  • Collaborating with Public Health Wales and other stakeholders to develop health promotion strategies.
  • Delivering education and training to staff, carers, and service users.
  • Contributing to research, audit, and service development to ensure evidence-based practice.
  • Acting as a role model and mentor to junior staff and students.
  • Managing own workload and responding to requests for data and reports.
  • Undertaking physical tasks relevant to clinical responsibilities, including Positive Behaviour Management.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
