Responsibilities
- Ensuring that all work is carried out according to instructions.
- Ensuring that all health and safety requirements are adhered to.
- Ensuring that all equipment is maintained and calibrated as required.
- Ensuring that all reports are accurate and succinct, delivering all required information to stakeholders.
- Carrying out testing and report writing as required as part of the team.
- Recruitment, training and development of staff to ensure availability of skills.
- Providing reports to the SLT on activity levels, costs, etc.
- Report writing and delivery of technical information to management.
- Planning and coordination of research and development projects.
- Supporting product rationalisation and design for quality projects.
- Coordinating and undertaking laboratory work, including visual inspections, sample preparation and testing.
- Maintaining and calibrating analytical and mechanical equipment to ensure reliable test data.
- Applying best practices in data collection, analysis and interpretation for technical accuracy.
- Working with cross-functional teams to identify root causes of problems.
- Implementing corrective actions and documenting outcomes.
- Presenting technical findings in a clear and professional manner.
- Keeping abreast of industry best practices and emerging technologies.
- Ensuring compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Managing support requests from customers and clients.
Qualifications
- Degree level qualification essential in Metallurgy, Materials Science or a very similar discipline.
- Post‑graduate certifications (MSc, PhD, etc.) are highly welcome.
- Proven experience of working in a laboratory environment, ideally for 2 or more years.
- Experience with microscopy, mechanical testing, corrosion, surface finish, heat treatment, and related techniques.
- Fluent written and spoken English, with the ability to write complex technical reports clearly and concisely.
- Experience specifying laboratory equipment is beneficial.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Good teamwork and communication abilities.
