Job description
Overview

Junior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care – 12 Month fixed term contract. Cross Site working required.

The critical care unit at St. Helier's has 22 beds to be used flexibly for level 2 and level 3 patients. There are 2 step down beds for patients who are level 1 and ready to go to the ward. The unit is staffed by 8 consultant intensivists and 16 junior doctors, with experienced trainees supervising those who are new to ITU. The Anaesthetics & Critical Care department also covers a Level 2 facility at Epsom Hospital.

The post is part of a hospitals group with St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group, serving a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey.

After years of collaboration, the two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021 to enhance collaboration on research, development, education, and training of the workforce.

Responsibilities
  • Recognise potentially life-threatening situations and initiate immediate resuscitative measures.
  • Train in the appropriate use and interpretation of cardio-pulmonary monitoring.
  • Engage in competency-based training, with regular assessment and 360-degree appraisals.

  • Work under supervision of Consultants and supervise junior fellows; rota allocation on either senior or junior tier based on experience and seniority.
Working pattern and supervision
  • Night on-call commitment based on a 1:8 rota, based at St Helier Hospital, covering ICU and HDU.
  • Night coverage: 2 junior doctors per night; daytime coverage: minimum 4 junior doctors in the unit.
  • Unit continuously staffed by a consultant intensivist who is on-site from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM and on-call (non-resident) thereafter. Currently Epsom unit cover is daytime only (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM) by critical care juniors. Night cover at Epsom provided by the Anaesthetic team.

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group includes St George’s Hospital (major trauma centre; teaching hospital), St Helier Hospital (Renal and Transplantation Unit; Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children), and Epsom Hospital (South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre).
