Main duties of the job

Duties of this role include:

Lead the delivery of safe and effective care to oncology patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, radiotherapy, and palliative care. Ensure adherence to national oncology guidelines (e.g., UKONS, NICE), protocols, and treatment pathways.

Oversee compliance with all regulatory, professional, and organisational standards, including those from CQC, HIS, HIW, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Provide clinical supervision, coaching, and mentorship for nurses and support staff, promoting ongoing professional development.

Work with consultants, pharmacy, and external partners to streamline services and enhance the patient experience. Promote a compassionate and personalised approach to care, respecting the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their families.

This is a full time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

WHO ARE YOU? You are experienced in acute nursing care, and oncology. You are experienced working in an acute hospital setting in a Senior Registered Nurse post or equivalent. You are experienced in customer care, including interacting with challenging customers and situations. You are experienced in rostering clinical teams to provide safe effective clinical care inline with labour guidelines. You are experienced in mentoring and developing clinical staff to provide exceptional patient care.

What do you do?

  • Specialist Clinical Leadership: Lead the delivery of safe and effective care to oncology patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, radiotherapy, and palliative care. Ensure adherence to national oncology guidelines (e.g., UKONS, NICE), protocols, and treatment pathways. Maintain personal clinical competencies and act as an expert resource and role model in oncology nursing practice. Coordinate safe administration of systemic anti‑cancer therapies (SACT), ensuring all staff involved are appropriately trained and competent.
  • Quality, Governance, and Patient Safety: Oversee compliance with all regulatory, professional, and organisational standards, including those from CQC, HIS, HIW, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Conduct and support clinical audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and Root Cause Analyses (RCAs). Lead on infection prevention and control, medicine management, and safeguarding within the oncology department. Ensure oncology services comply with local and national clinical governance frameworks, including management of chemotherapy‑related adverse events and oncological emergencies (e.g., neutropenic sepsis).
  • Team Leadership and Staff Development: Supervise and support the oncology nursing team, ensuring safe staffing levels, appropriate skill mix, and high performance. Provide clinical supervision, coaching, and mentorship for nurses and support staff, promoting ongoing professional development. Develop and maintain a culture of learning and excellence, supporting revalidation, mandatory training, and specialist oncology training (e.g., SACT passports, cytotoxic safety). Support workforce planning, rota coordination, and succession planning in collaboration with the DOCS/CSM.
  • Service Development and Operational Efficiency: Contribute to strategic planning and development of oncology services, supporting innovations in treatment, patient pathways, and digital health. Ensure the department runs efficiently, managing resources effectively, including staff, equipment, and clinical consumables. Work with consultants, pharmacy, and external partners to streamline services and enhance the patient experience. Lead on the implementation of service improvement initiatives aligned with local and national cancer care targets.
  • Patient‑Centred Care and Experience: Promote a compassionate and personalised approach to care, respecting the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their families. Act as a point of escalation for patient complaints, concerns, and complex case discussions, ensuring timely resolution and learning. Monitor patient feedback and quality indicators (e.g., patient satisfaction, treatment delays, complications) and use outcomes to inform improvements.
  • Collaborative Working and Representation: Build strong relationships with oncology consultants, pharmacists, palliative care teams, and allied health professionals to deliver coordinated care. Represent the oncology service at hospital meetings, cancer board reviews, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions. Support departmental and hospital‑wide initiatives, deputising for senior leaders as required and contributing to hospital on‑call rotas.

What do you have?

  • Essential: Registered Nurse (Adult) with valid NMC registration. Specialist experience in oncology nursing, including SACT administration. Recognised qualification in oncology nursing or cancer care (e.g., UKONS SACT Passport, chemotherapy competency). Strong leadership and people management experience. Excellent clinical decision‑making, communication, and coordination skills. Working knowledge of clinical governance, cancer pathways, and patient safety principles.
  • Desirable: Advanced practice or non‑medical prescribing qualification (V300). Experience managing oncology services in a senior clinical role. Leadership or management qualification (e.g., ILM, PGCert, MBA). Knowledge of research, clinical trials, and innovative cancer therapies. Familiarity with national cancer strategies, waiting time targets, and audit requirements (e.g., COSD, NCDA).
