DEPARTMENT: News and Current Affairs, BBC Breakfast and News at One
LOCATION: Media City, Salford
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £28,000 - £38,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Hours of work for this role

A rota pattern across seven days leading BBC Breakfast and the BBC News at One. Unsociable hours and shifts, including nights and weekends are a key part of your pattern.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The BBC is looking for a creative broadcast journalist who is driven by ideas to produce content for BBC Breakfast and the BBC News at One.

We need a team player who can work under significant pressure and react to unfolding events, who has a understanding of BBC audiences and the ability to connect across all BBC platforms.

Breakfast and the News at One are two of the biggest BBC News programmes on BBC One. Based in a modern HQ at Media City in Salford the role involves dealing with issues and ideas involving senior politicians, major sports stars and A‑list TV and film stars. The programme has a reputation for shining a spotlight on the biggest stories and issues of the time and is the first Breakfast programme to win a prestigious BAFTA award.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
  • Regularly contribute ideas for stories, segments, guests and story developments.
  • Book guests and write briefs for BBC Breakfast and the BBC News at One.
  • Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • Liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC to ensure output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.
  • Prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy at all times.
  • Have compliant knowledge of media law and OFCOM guidelines.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • A journalist with experience in broadcast, print or online, who is already working in the industry and has background knowledge of political, legal and lifestyle issues.
  • Regularly contribute ideas at key meetings with an eye for creative storytelling, package production and guest booking.
  • Comply with and understand BBC's Editorial guidelines, BBC policies and BBC Values.
  • Prepared to regularly work unsocial hours including nights and weekend shifts.
