Job description

The Inclusion Assistant plays a key role in supporting pupils with additional needs so that they can thrive and achieve their full potential. Working under the guidance of the Assistant Head for Inclusion and SENCo, the postholder provides advanced support, practical strategies, and effective interventions that enhance learning and wellbeing across the school. This role ensures that every child receives the right help at the right time. Through observation, assessment, and close collaboration with colleagues, parents, and external professionals, the Inclusion Assistant contributes directly to inclusive teaching, positive behaviour, and improved pupil outcomes.

Pupil Support and Progress
  • Support pupils in class and in small groups to achieve specific learning and behaviour targets.
  • Contribute to the assessment and ongoing monitoring of pupils with additional needs.
  • Help develop and review Child Learning Profiles and Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Liaise with the SENCo, teachers, parents, and external agencies to share information and agree support strategies.
  • Support the SENCo in annual reviews, referral processes, and completion of required documentation.
  • Build effective relationships with families to strengthen communication and understanding of pupil needs.
Systems and Organisation
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to behaviour and progress reports.
  • Support the organisation of training for staff and parents and collect feedback.
  • Help update and review the SEN register and ensure data accuracy across relevant systems.
Professional Practice and Development
  • Participate in ongoing training and apply new learning to improve practice.
  • Support staff in making classroom adaptations for pupils with additional needs.
  • Demonstrate confidentiality, initiative, and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
Professional Expertise
  • GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
  • Experience working with children with special educational needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Understanding of the SEN Code of Practice and relevant legislation.
  • Strong observation and assessment skills, with the ability to use data to inform targets.
Approach and Mindset
