Overview

Are you experienced in frontline homelessness services? We're seeking a committed Temporary Homeless Duty Officer to support a busy Housing Options team within a local authority in Essex. This is a full-time, office-based role, providing frontline support to individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness. You will play a key role in ensuring the council meets its statutory obligations under the Homelessness Reduction Act 2018, including assessing applications, allocating temporary accommodation, and providing housing advice at the public counter.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver face-to-face Housing Options and Homeless Counter services (Monday-Friday)
  • Assess and process homelessness applications in line with all relevant legislation
  • Allocate and manage placements into temporary accommodation
  • Support the day-to-day desk and counter functions within the Housing Options service
  • Provide out-of-hours standby cover during evenings, weekends, and public holidays
Requirements
  • Direct experience handling face-to-face homelessness queries
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • In-depth knowledge of:
    • Homelessness Reduction Act 2018
    • Housing Act 1985
    • Safeguarding processes
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours as needed
  • A valid Standard DBS is essential
