Role Summary
Access Talent Group are recruiting for a local council that is looking for a Highways Engineer to join their growing Highways Maintenance team. The engineer will support senior engineers and successfully design and deliver highway and/or structures schemes from inception through to completion. Schemes range from small junction improvements to multimillion‑pound major projects.
Responsibilities
- Design: Propose scheme options and prepare designs from inception through to detailed design and subsequent implementation in accordance with current national and local design standards and policies; giving due consideration to health and safety, equalities and sustainability.
- Project Management: Establish agreed solutions with interested parties that meet engineering and environmental considerations, establish achievable scheme programmes, and manage external consultants and project staff to achieve targets.
- Financial Control: Prepare estimates, monitor and review project costs to ensure completion within agreed budgets, including work, predicted maintenance costs and design and site supervision fees.
- Scheme Implementation: Prepare, tender and assess contract documentation to ensure construction of works on site meets programme and budget. Provide technical input and project management during construction, and agree final measures.
- Communication: Represent the team and the City Council at meetings, assist and carry out consultations on scheme proposals, advise members as necessary, liaise with project client, team, consultants and the general public, and prepare reports as required.
- Training: Maintain personal technical expertise in new methods and technologies, and encourage assistant engineers/students to pursue development through effective supervision and allocation of work.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years post‑graduate experience.
- Ability to carry out engineering projects up to £500,000 from initiation through completion with minimal direction.
- Strong technical expertise.
- Consistently deliver projects on programme and budget, setting targets, monitoring progress, and allocating resources.
- Experience of contract documentation preparation.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills.
- Competent liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
- Capacity to offer engineering advice and mentor assistant engineers/students.
- Good commercial awareness.
- Deputise for the Senior Engineer in their absence.
