Job description
Senior Project Manager - Highways Delivery (Liverpool)

Step into a role where you'll have real ownership, real influence, and the backing to deliver major highway works the right way. As Senior Project Manager on a key Liverpool framework, you'll lead from the front on site, shaping safety culture, programme performance, and stakeholder confidence while bringing complex construction phases in on time and within budget.

About the Business

You’ll be joining a well-established highways delivery contractor working on a major Liverpool framework. The work is varied, visible, and stakeholder‑facing – ideal if you enjoy being on site, leading teams, and building trusted relationships with clients and the wider supply chain.

Responsibilities
  • Leading multidisciplinary project teams from mobilisation through to completion.
  • Driving project performance across HSEW, quality, programme, commercial control, and client satisfaction.
  • Managing subcontractors and interfaces across design, utilities, enabling works, and main works.
  • Owning planning, reporting, and risk management, ensuring actions land and issues are resolved early.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with clients, designers, and key stakeholders to keep decisions moving.
  • Setting the tone for a positive culture of collaboration, innovation, and safety across the whole team.
  • Supporting commercial colleagues with costs, change control, and contractual responsibilities (NEC3/NEC4).
  • Identifying gaps in behaviours, capability, or resourcing – and taking action to strengthen performance.
  • Directing, motivating, and maintaining a competent, trained, flexible, and engaged delivery team.
  • Managing client expectations during delivery, including change and decision‑making, to protect outcomes.
  • Championing the highest standards of health, safety, and wellbeing at all times.
  • Monitoring weekly progress, liaising with department heads and suppliers to remove blockers and mitigate delays.
  • Keeping accurate records of performance, budget, and activity to support governance and continuous improvement.
What You'll Need to Bring
  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or a closely related discipline).
  • 10+ years’ experience within the highway construction sector, including 2+ years in a Project Manager role (or equivalent level of leadership).
  • Previous experience delivering highways schemes for National Highways.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 contracts.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams through complex construction phases.
  • A visible, proactive approach to health, safety and wellbeing leadership.
  • Excellent organisational skills for coordinating sizeable teams of contractors and consultants.
  • Confidence engaging with, influencing, and communicating with senior public stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across a broad supply chain.

  • Salary up to £85,000
  • Car allowance
  • Benefits package included
  • Genuine opportunities for career progression and professional development
