Higher Scientist - Underwater Acoustics

We are looking to recruit a Higher Scientist to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics area. We are seeking early-career scientists and engineers, ideally with a graduate qualification in Physics, Acoustics, or a related discipline, with experience in either industry or academia, or a post-graduate qualification.

As an Acoustical Higher Scientist, you'll be expected to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance research, requiring a careful, methodical approach and attention to detail. You may also need to identify opportunities for commercial applications arising from your work.

The role offers an exciting opportunity to maximise impact from high-quality science within specialised laboratory facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop improved techniques for underwater acoustic measurement and calibration
  • Develop experimental techniques for acoustic measurement for delivery to collaborators
  • Contribute to scientific work, including measurement services and research & development projects
  • Contribute to scientific outputs through journal publications and scientific conferences
  • Share learnings with colleagues and mentor those with less experience
  • Develop partnerships to strengthen capability
  • Act as an ambassador for your work externally
  • Provide technical support for proposals and bids
About You
  • A science-related degree and expertise in your field
  • Experience leading, planning, and delivering complex research projects
  • Understanding of underlying physical principles (qualified to degree level)
  • Knowledge of acoustics and/or marine acoustic technology
  • Track record of precise experimental work
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong motivation, ability to collaborate and network effectively
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in data analysis techniques
  • Familiarity with systems engineering
  • Experience with software packages such as Matlab and LabView
