Head of Commercial – Electricity Transmission (Substations)

Location: South West / South Wales (travel required)

About the Role

A leading UK infrastructure organisation is seeking a Head of Commercial to join their Electricity Transmission division, supporting the delivery of high-voltage substation and transmission projects (up to 400kV) across the South West and South Wales.

This is a key senior leadership position, responsible for shaping commercial strategy, driving commercial governance, and developing a high-performing commercial team across a portfolio of technically complex energy projects.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead and develop the commercial team, ensuring compliance with internal governance and industry standards
  • Define team structure, roles, responsibilities and capability requirements
  • Support APC / professional development pathways and mentor commercial staff
  • Embed a strong culture of commercial and contractual awareness
Commercial Strategy & Governance
  • Work with senior leadership to define annual business strategy and commercial objectives
  • Oversee bid strategy, tender reviews, contract conditions and risk assessments
  • Ensure robust commercial controls, effective change management and accurate reporting
  • Lead on contract negotiation within governance thresholds
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly reporting, valuations, forecasting and cash-flow management
Project & Contract Delivery
  • Oversee contract administration processes, including compensation events and change control
  • Support project teams with cost/value reconciliations, forecasting and margin optimisation
  • Review project performance, challenge assumptions and drive corrective action where required
  • Work collaboratively with legal and operational teams to prevent or resolve disputes
  • Ensure compliance with audit requirements and year-end reporting
About You

You will be a commercially astute leader with a strong background in major infrastructure or energy projects, ideally within electricity transmission or substations.

Key Experience
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or related commercial field (or equivalent experience)
  • Significant commercial leadership experience within infrastructure or power projects
  • Strong understanding of standard forms of contract and contract law
  • Knowledge of programming, project controls and commercial risk management
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Proven ability to lead, develop and inspire teams
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites and regional offices
