Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for patients receiving haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration or plasma exchange.
  • Contribute to the education, development and line management of other staff members, qualified and unqualified.
  • Work collaboratively and co‑operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families with minimal or no supervision.
  • Participate in the dialysis unit on‑call team and assist with the development of ward‑based dialysis provision on the established Renal ward.
  • Support the BCUHB in achieving Renal Association guidelines and independently refer to other professionals in the case of patient need.
  • In conjunction with medical teams assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence‑based care for patients on haemodialysis, haemofiltration, haemodialfiltration and plasma exchange.
  • Facilitate, monitor and improve care both directly and indirectly.
  • Supervise practice, carry out clinical audit and develop practice through knowledge of research in conjunction with teaching of professional colleagues.
  • The haemodialysis nurse has responsibility for own caseload of patients providing an organisational and support network in the planning, provision, surveillance and monitoring of haemodialysis patients.
  • The role also includes assisting with adequate staffing levels on the dialysis unit and the dedicated renal ward as required.
  • Liaise regularly with haemodialysis nurses across BCU.
