Haematology Nurse Consultant

As Consultant Nurse for Haematology, you will be responsible for supporting, leading, and developing advanced nursing practice. Working at a strategic level, you will collaborate across the Trust and Acute Hospital Alliance to ensure delivery of safe, effective, and person-centred care.

You will lead on clinical innovation and excellence in patient care, provide strategic and operational leadership. You will spend at least 50% of your time in direct autonomous clinical practice, with clinical responsibility for a defined cohort of patients and their carers' and will provide leadership for clinicians within Haematology. You will also champion best practice through audit, research, the application of national policy, and act as a key clinical leader and role model for staff across the service.

Main duties of the job

Advanced and Expert Level Practice

Lead advanced, autonomous clinical care for adults with a Haematology malignancy, including assessment, prescribing, and care planning.

Maintain expert clinical skills and provide direct patient care (minimum 50% of time).

Support safe, evidence-based practice across departments and promote patient-centred care in partnership with families and carers.

Actively contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and apply advanced clinical reasoning in complex cases.

Consultancy and Leadership

Lead the development and implementation of innovations in Haematology.

Apply expert knowledge and lead change strategically across whole systems in their everyday practice.

Act as a senior clinical leader, offering expert advice, driving quality improvement, and promoting patient safety.

Represent the service in internal and external reviews, and trust-wide initiatives.

Provide compassionate leadership, coaching, and mentorship to support team development and workforce sustainability.

Education and Training

Create a learning culture that supports professional development for nurses and students.

Collaborate with education providers to develop and deliver training on Haematological care.

Promote evidence-based practice and enhance the clinical competence of staff.

Research

Generate new knowledge through research.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be an expert practitioner in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and case management of their patient group, employing a high degree of autonomy.

Make decisions where precedents do not exist, where appropriate without recourse to others, advising and supporting colleagues in the management of patients where standard protocols do not apply.To undertake a specified clinical case load for assessment and treatment of patients using advanced clinical reasoning skills to determine clinical diagnosis and treatment. Normally 50% of time will be directed to clinical workload.To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient records, using paper and electronic technology e.g., electronic patient records (EPR) in line with legal requirements, local and national policies, guidelines, and standards of practice. To be responsible for ensuring other staff maintain standards.

To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and can work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment and support other staff to do likewise.

Draw on advanced knowledge and exercise professional skills, working across traditional professional and service boundaries to expedite assessment and decision making in relation to the management of patients throughout the patient pathway.

Education
  • NMC Registered nurse or HCPC registered
  • MSc in Advanced Practice.
  • Doctorate Level 8 education or working towards
  • Consultant practice competence portfolio or working towards.
  • University accredited DPS/DPP supervision for independent prescribing.
  • Clear and continued evidence of CPD
  • Non-Medical Referrals Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations (IRMER) Trained
  • Teaching and mentoring qualification.
  • Clear and demonstrable evidence of advanced, autonomous practice.
Experience
  • Significant experience in care of Haematology patients
  • Demonstrable work at a strategic level.
  • Experienced in communicating highly complex, sensitive and upsetting news to patients, family and colleagues.
  • Able to demonstrate strong influencing and negotiation skills being able to present credible and compelling arguments to senior teams.
  • Clear and demonstrable evidence of advanced, autonomous practice in the management of Haematology patients.
  • Evidence of research, either individual or as part of a team.
  • Evidence of multi-professional, cross boundary, working.
  • Evidence of publication.
