Reporting to the GCCCO, this is a key leadership role responsible for managing the global SCU team. The SCU team has primary responsibility for managing a portfolio of distressed clients. The team’s objective is to minimize losses, maximize recoveries and always follow HSBC’s conduct rules seeking to treat customers fairly and to safeguard HSBC’s reputation. The team also works closely with the business to identify customers showing signs of stress so early action can be taken to mitigate risk and minimize potential loss. SCU is responsible for managing post insolvency activities including management of equity interests. The role holder provides leadership and oversight of the global SCU team to ensure the team follows a consistent global process and delivers on its objectives. Leveraging his / her extensive restructuring experience, the role holder is expected to be involved in an advisory or approver capacity in the most complex restructuring / distressed cases where required, in order to support the senior SCU transactors. Represent the SCU team in governance forums, with external and internal stakeholders and act as a Senior Sponsor for transformation activities linked to the management of problem exposures.
Principle Accountabilities
- Manage the regional SCU teams as well as the SCU Centre of Excellence. Working with the GCCCO, Regional Heads of WCRM and CROs, build a global integrated professional SCU team which is best in class across the industry;
- Provide advice, guidance and approve large and / or complex restructuring cases and impairments;
- In conjunction with the business, increase focus on early problem recognition to maximize recoveries;
- Ensure distressed clients under SCU management responsibilities are pro-actively managed, appropriate professional support is obtained, reasons for distress and potential solutions are quickly identified, strategy / action plans to minimize losses and protect HSBC’s reputation are created and vigorously implemented
- Ensure the team always follows HSBC’s conduct rules seeking to treat customers fairly;
- Support/ implement the continuing development of SCU’s operating model so that the team operates increasingly effectively and efficiently and is able to deliver HSBC's strategic goals;
- Act as a Senior Sponsor on key transformation activities linked to the management of problem exposures;
- Share SCU lessons learned and support training initiatives to help highlight root causes, anticipate market trends and continuously seek to improve portfolio credit quality;
- Continuously seek to improve the resolution rates of the portfolio, driving an operating model of pro-active and effective situation management;
- Optimise the number of accounts returned to business/fully repaid/resolved;
- Work closely with the business (and transformation teams) to build and operate a globally consistent and fully integrated recording, monitoring and reporting operating environment;
- Embed the function’s vision and values, to inspire and engage people to create an inclusive, high performing and execution-centric culture. Act as an interaction point with the business and other key stakeholders
- Encourage proactive people management, with continuing strong results in Snapshot and retention;
- Initiate and maintain relationships with regulators and internal / external auditors as needed to ensure strategic alignment;
- Lead with first-class subject matter expertise and stakeholder management;
Experience
- 15+ years of experience in wholesale credit risk management and credit approvals, with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in a restructuring team or working with distressed clients within a global banking institution.
- Proven experience in leading regional credit risk or restructuring functions and management of large, complex credit portfolios. Extensive experience in handling complex restructuring cases, leading restructuring negotiations with stakeholders and strategic credit risk decisions including impairments.
- Deep understanding of portfolio risk dynamics, early warning signs, deteriorating credit risk and reputational risk management. Experience in managing multi-jurisdictional restructurings, credit risk frameworks, ensuring consistency in risk governance, policies and decision making.
External Environment & Regulatory Landscape
- Understanding of insolvency regimes and impact on credit recoveries.
- Experience in regulatory engagement, particularly with the PRA, ECB, HKMA, OCC and other global financial regulators.
