Job description
Overview

The Gateley Hamer team is recruiting a GIS Technician to be based in our Guildford office. Gateley is embracing a hybrid working culture, with a mix of home and office working available. The role focuses on producing high quality plans in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or Computer Aided Design (CAD) as required, and supporting the GIS Team to deliver documents for Site Identification, Compulsory Purchase and Land Acquisition.

There are opportunities to assist in developing an integrated online GIS and land referencing database system, review existing workflows, and develop new workflows, particularly in ArcGIS Pro.

The Gateley Hamer team is a property consultancy that helps clients extract value from development assets with expertise in CPOs, easements and wayleaves, infrastructure projects, land referencing and public inquiries. We operate across the public and private sectors, working with developers, planning professionals, local authorities and scheme promoters.

GIS supports understanding a site’s needs and informs essential planning decisions. Our growing GIS team uses industry‑leading ArcGIS software within a bespoke property research system to tailor data interpretation, visualization and dissemination to client needs. We combine analytics with cartographic principles to provide high‑quality evidencing of land ownership boundaries for referencing activities and to support various projects.

The role requires a proactive and collaborative approach within a multidisciplinary team and client-facing environments.

Responsibilities
  • Produce high quality GIS and CAD plans as required.
  • Support the GIS Team to meet company objectives for site identification, compulsory purchase and land acquisition documentation.
  • Assist in developing an integrated online GIS and land referencing database system and advise on workflow improvements, particularly in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Develop and analyse spatial databases; maintain QA procedures on all datasets and mapping outputs.
  • Understand UK GIS datasets and open-source data; familiarity with His Majesty’s Land Registry (HMLR) title plans is preferred.
  • Help develop efficient working practices and share knowledge within the team; provide basic in-house GIS training to non-technical staff.
  • Work on projects for resident associations, land agents, local authorities, government departments and solicitors; communicate effectively with clients and third parties.
  • Manage workloads to meet deadlines; multitask and work autonomously with high attention to detail; maintain accurate documentation and proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Desirable: experience in Python and SQL coding.
Qualifications
  • Graduate with a degree in Geography (or related field) or equivalent industry experience; comprehensive experience using ArcGIS software.
  • Knowledge of UK GIS datasets and open-source data.
  • Understanding of HMLR title plans.
  • Strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills; highly motivated and conscientious.
  • Ability to prioritise workload, follow instructions to tight deadlines, and work autonomously.
  • Confidence in Excel and overall PC proficiency.
