Job description

Morningstar seeks an experienced financial journalist for the position of mutual funds and exchange traded funds reporter on our European editorial team, with a mandate to cover news and trends in the asset management industry and their products across Europe.

Morningstar is a global leader in mutual fund and ETF data and analysis. Morningstar’s editorial team writes and publishes news on the financial markets and investing along with digestible research content in the form of articles, data visualization, videos and podcasts. We function as an independent newsroom separate from the research departments.

The successful candidate will be in a unique position to leverage Morningstar’s deep resources in delivering engaging articles which help investors and advisors navigate performance trends and new fund or ETF offerings. At the same time, given the importance of Morningstar’s voice across the asset management industry, your stories will be keenly followed by professionals.

Morningstar’s global websites are visited by millions of readers each month who are looking to make sense of the markets, find investment advice, and manage their finances. In Europe and the UK, Morningstar’s editorial team publishes in six languages, and each country-specific website features a combination of local journalism and translations of stories from our global team. The successful candidate for this role will write both original content and local-language adaptations of other Morningstar stories. For this role, we are seeking a reporter that is fluent in Dutch or French. Responsibilities for the position will include reviewing translations of articles by other reporters for publishing on websites aimed at readers in either of those languages.

We are looking for a reporter who can combine a lively, engaging writing style with a proven ability to make complex subjects accessible to a wide audience, from retail investors and pension savers to financial advisers and institutional investors.

The successful candidate will possess a sound understanding of financial markets and strong news judgement. The role requires the ability to crunch numbers into news‑you‑can‑use, build and leverage a strong network in the funds industry and engage in thought leadership, which requires a keen awareness of the fund & ETF trends that matter.

Responsibilities
  • Publish on average two articles a week, ranging from short takes to longer deep dives on key trends across mutual fund and ETFs.
  • Develop a strong network of expert commentators and asset management industry sources.
  • Build narratives around key investing trends, remaining ahead of the conversation on shifting flows, performance patterns and strategies, as well as exciting product launches.
  • Regionalize and translate stories produced by teammates in other bureaus for Morningstar websites in France or the Netherlands.
Qualifications
  • A passion for writing about investing and financial markets. 3+ years covering investing and markets as a journalist, ideally with a focus on asset managers and funds.
  • Strong news judgement for identifying subjects for articles.
  • Demonstrated writing skills.
  • Proven ability to write on deadline and for same-day turnaround.
  • At least a C1‑equivalent command in both writing and speech in Dutch or French.
  • Fluency in Italian, Spanish or German is a plus.
  • Curious, creative thinker with a collaborative approach to producing commentary and storytelling.
  • A collaborative mindset.
  • Demonstrated comfort with Excel and learning new databases and other tools.

Morningstar's hybrid work environment gives you the opportunity to collaborate in‑person each week as we've found that we're at our best when we're purposely together on a regular basis. In most of our locations, our hybrid work model is four days in‑office each week. A range of other benefits are also available to enhance flexibility as needs change. No matter where you are, you'll have tools and resources to engage meaningfully with your global colleagues.
