Job Title: Food Safety Officer
Hours: 21 hours per week
Rate: £40–£45 per hour
Location: West Sussex
Start Date: January 2026
Contract: 6 Months

My client, a local council in West Sussex, is seeking an experienced Food Safety Officer to join their Environmental Health team on a contract. This is a fantastic opportunity to help protect public health and ensure compliance with food safety standards across the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out food hygiene inspections of businesses in line with relevant legislation and council policies.
  • Investigate food complaints and respond to incidents promptly.
  • Assess compliance with food safety regulations and provide advice to businesses on corrective actions.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Take enforcement action where necessary, including serving notices and preparing evidence for legal proceedings.
What They’re Looking For
  • Strong knowledge of food safety legislation and enforcement procedures.
  • Previous experience conducting food hygiene inspections within a local authority or similar setting.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a busy caseload.
