Job description

Camden is changing on the inside to make life better for everyone. Our residents and communities are at the heart of everything we do. We're home to the most important conversations happening today and we're making radical social change a reality, so that nobody gets left behind. Here's where you can help decide a better future for us all. In recognition of the vital role our team plays in keeping citizens safe, we're growing the team and are recruiting to a number of additional EHO/Food Safety Officer roles. If you'd like to join one of London's largest and busiest food safety teams, look no further.

What You'll Be Doing

We're seeking fully qualified and authorised food safety professionals to join our dynamic food safety team. You will take responsibility for delivering the full range of food safety, and infectious disease functions. In addition, you will provide resilience for the wider ambitions of the Public Protection service to respond flexibly to deliver a broad range of environmental health and public health functions as required. Responsible for the enforcement of food safety (including hygiene and standards), and health and safety legislation in (primarily higher risk) food businesses, investigation of complaints and food borne illnesses, and supporting food businesses to improve. You will investigate, negotiate, and mediate between parties to deliver positive outcomes, and where necessary use the full range of legal enforcement powers. You will also develop and deliver special projects, policy, and research on areas of expertise and/or functional activity within the service. The role includes a substantial amount of autonomy, report writing, resolution, preventative and advisory work. The role is based in an enabled and empowered team-focused service where all officers are expected to work flexibly to meet evolving services demands. You will work as one team to assist in the development of a culture where knowledge, experience and responsibility for making decisions on complex issues is shared where appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Food Safety Environmental Health Officer: Holds a BSc/MSc (or its antecedents; or equivalency certificate) in Environmental Health; and registered by the Environmental Health Registration Board or the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health to practice as an Environmental Health Officer/Practitioner; and meets the baseline competency requirements of the Food Law Code of Practice for an Authorised Officer; and with recent experience of carrying out relevant food safety and health and safety interventions.
  • Food Safety Officer: Holds a Higher Certificate in Food Control awarded by the Environmental Health Registration Board or the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health; or another "suitable qualification" as defined in the Food Law Code of Practice for an Authorised Officer; and meets the competency requirements of the Food Law Code of Practice for an Authorised Officer; and with recent experience of carrying out relevant food safety interventions; and ideally holds a suitable qualification in Health and Safety enforcement such as a Diploma/Higher Certificate in Health and Safety Enforcement. Other related qualifications including IOSH/NEBOSH Diploma may be considered.
  • Ideally has recent experience of carrying out relevant health and safety interventions.

You will have an excellent knowledge/understanding of the legislative framework relevant to the team, and experience in its application. You will deal with a wide range of casework including difficult and complex cases, resolving and delivering innovative interventions. To succeed, you will bring a track record of working collaboratively with internal and external partners, demonstrating good outcome‑focussed customer care and communicational skills to identify innovative and creative approaches to complaints and Camden objectives. You will have the ability to take an organised approach to your own workload whilst dealing with conflicting priorities, and to ensuring a customer service focused approach. We will also consider graduate EHOs/candidates who are in the process of completing their food safety qualifications to apply. If successful you will be offered a graduate/training position until you can be fully authorised.
