This is a full-time role with competitive benefits and a supportive environment for growth.
Full time 37 Hours per week – Fixed term for 23 months
Are you a skilled Floor Layer looking for stable, local work and a team that values your expertise? Join Reading Borough Council’s Housing Repairs Team and help keep homes across Reading safe, comfortable, and well-maintained. You will undertake floor laying in various buildings, houses, flats, and maisonettes owned or managed by the Council.
We seek the best talent from the widest pool of people as diversity and inclusion is the key to our success. Reading Borough Council is a Disability Confident Employer and is committed to the recruitment and continued employment of people with disabilities.
The role will be based at our Bennet Road depot – 19 Bennet Road, Reading, RG2 0QX.
You’ll carry out a wide range of flooring and repair work across Council-managed homes and buildings — using materials such as vinyl, laminate, and other modern floor coverings. This includes assessing the materials needed, obtaining them from main stores or suppliers, and seeking approval for repairs that exceed specified work orders.
Your work will primarily be in occupied properties, so it's essential to exercise care to avoid damage to occupants' property and treat all customers (tenants) with courtesy and respect.
At the end of each job, you’ll leave your workspace clean and tidy, completing all job sheets and timesheets promptly and accurately. You’ll follow health and safety regulations, wear your uniform and ID badge, and represent Reading Borough Council with pride.
You’ll also help us maintain high-quality services by identifying additional repair needs, meeting productivity targets, and managing your tools and materials efficiently to deliver excellent results for our customers.
This role also requires availability for emergency call-out as part of a rota system for out-of-hours emergencies.
You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.
Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success.
We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition is strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.
