Job description

Benjamin Thomas are delighted to be partnering with a successful, growing family-owned business in Gloucester. With ambitious growth plans our client prides themselves on their strong values, collaborative culture, and ambitious growth plans, including the development of new revenue streams.

We are seeking a hands-on Financial Controller or Head of Finance to oversee the day-to-day management of the finance function and lead a small team of four. This role reports directly to the Board, and is a pivotal role with responsibility for ensuring financial integrity, delivering insight to support decision-making, and driving continuous improvement across the finance team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and qualified finance professional who enjoys being close to the detail while also shaping the bigger picture in a growing, entrepreneurial business.

The responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing a small finance team (currently four staff), providing direction, support, and development.
  • Taking ownership of the monthly management accounts process and delivering accurate and timely financial reporting to the Board.
  • Preparing budgets, forecasts, and cashflow projections and working closely with the business to provide insight and challenge. This also includes explaining financial issues to non-finance managers across the business.
  • Delivering variance analysis and present findings to the Board, offering commercial recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Overseeing financial accounting activities, ensuring reconciliations, controls, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Liaising with the external accountancy practice regarding statutory accounts, tax, and audit processes.
  • Partnering with operational and commercial teams to support the introduction of new revenue streams and business initiatives.
  • Identifying opportunities to streamline processes, improve systems, and strengthen financial reporting capability. There is the potential for a new ERP system rollout in 2026.

We are looking for:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with proven post-qualification experience.
  • Experience in an SME or family-owned environment is preferred but not essential.
  • Hands-on approach with the ability to balance operational detail and strategic input.
  • Strong management and leadership skills, with experience in developing and motivating small teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with strong Excel skills.
  • Confident communicator able to engage effectively with non-finance colleagues and Board members.

Our client is offering:

  • A varied and impactful role at the heart of a growing, family-owned business.
  • Opportunity to shape the finance function and play a key part in the company’s growth journey.
  • Competitive salary of £55,000-£70,000.
  • Access to the company pension scheme.
  • Health and Wellbeing programmes.
