Overview

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities
  • Lead on preparation of monthly and annual accounts for the Trust.
  • Support the capital team with capital planning, forecasting, and reporting for the Trust.
  • Manage balance sheet (non-current assets, provisions, and liabilities) including planning and forecasting.
  • Manage VAT accounting and reporting for the Trust, providing advice to internal stakeholders on all VAT related matters.
  • Ensure all records and working papers are maintained to meet internal and external audit requirements.
  • Ensure accounting systems are maintained in line with internal governance and meet requirements of reporting to NHSE.
  • Deputise for the UHN Head of Financial Services when required.

Essential criteria
  • Professionally qualified accountant (e.g. CIMA, ACCA, CIPFA, ACA)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Up to date knowledge of Accounting Standards, NHS Manual for Accounts and VAT legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Masters or equivalent qualification
Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum of 2 years in a senior finance role working within a large finance department
  • Must be able to demonstrate general accounting experience in a large and complex organisation(s)
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the current NHS financial accounting regime and new NHS financial environment, including DHSC Group Accounting Manual and the FT Accounting and Reporting Manual
  • Experience of Capital Accounting and managing financial accounting functions including producing final accounts and working with audit, VAT and financial systems management
Desirable criteria
  • Considerable proven experience operating at a senior level within the NHS (ideally Acute Sector)
  • Experience of working in a variety of functions within the NHS e.g. Financial Management, Financial Accounting/Services, Cost and Contracting, Capital, Audit, Financial Planning and Commissioning
  • Experience of implementing and developing new systems e.g. general ledger, fixed asset systems

Including factual reference, occupational health clearance and statutory and mandatory training record.

If you need to have a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check, as a requirement of the role, you will be required to repay the cost of obtaining a DBS check (£49.50) and this amount will be reclaimed from your first salary. From 1st February 2019 all new starters to the Trust are required to join the DBS update service as per Trust DBS Re-checking Policy which has an annual cost of £16. New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £49.50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.

Please note that news starters with KGH are subject to a six month probationary period.
