A leading public health organization in the UK is seeking a Field Epidemiology Training Programme Fellow for a 24-month full-time role. The fellow will conduct outbreak investigations, contribute to public health research, and participate in training activities. Candidates should possess a Master's or PhD in a relevant scientific field and demonstrate experience in public health or epidemiology. Competitive salary and hybrid working options available.
The UK Field Epidemiology Training Programme (UKFETP) is a fulltime competency based 2-year specialist postgraduate training programme. The programme is aimed at medical, scientific, veterinary or nursing staff who are, or will be working, in a post involving field investigation and epidemiology and who want to further enhance their specialist skills.
Training is provided on the job, but at least ten percent of time is dedicated to sequentially delivered formal training courses based for the most part in the UK. The UKFETP is a two-year full-time training programme. Funding is not available to extend training contracts beyond 2 years except in statutory circumstances.
Fellows will be based in one UKFETP training location within England, Northern Ireland or Wales for the two-year Fellowship. The training locations include national centres, UKSHA Field Service teams and Health Protection Teams.
Fellows will have the opportunity to join the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team.
1. Identify clusters of illness/ cases or respond to a report of a potential incident or outbreak: conduct risk assessment and establish what level of control or investigation is necessary.
2. Be a member of outbreak or incident control committees.

It should be noted that the work of the UKHSA is of a confidential nature and must not be communicated to other persons except where required for authorised purposes.
Fellows will usually be required to relocate for the period of training.
Fellows will;
Completion of specialist training competencies, other than those to be gained through the UKFETP, would normally be expected to be completed before entry to the UKFETP i.e. Faculty of Public Health training competencies. Alternatively, there should be sufficient time after the UKFETP to complete all specialist training competencies. A letter of support from the relevant Training Programme Director will be required.

Stage 1: Application & Sift
You will be required to complete an application form. You will be assessed on essential criteria, and this will be in the form of an Application form (Employer/ Activity history section on the application) up to 1500 word Statement of Suitability.
This should outline how your skills, experience and knowledge provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria.

Shortlisting
Longlisted applications will then be shortlisted against all criteria (including desirable) listed in the job description.

Stage 2: Interview (competency based)
Invitations to interview will be sent out at the end of April 2026.
You will be asked to prepare an analysis report and verbally present your findings. The subject of this will be sent to you prior to interview.
Successful candidates will begin the programme on 10th September 2026.
Interviews will be held in central London between 19th 21st May 2026.
Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
Hybrid
This role is being offered as hybrid working based at one of our scientific campus/office in various UKHSA offices, Public Health Agency Northern Ireland and Public Health Wales. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month). Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport link and benefit from benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).
If based at one of our scientific campus, you will be required to have a minimum of a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Successful candidates for this role must pass an enhanced disclosure and barring security check before they can be appointed.

Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
