Clinical/counselling Psychologist or Family Intervention Worker – Waltham Forest Early Intervention in Psychosis Team (Band 7, secondment)

We are looking to appoint a dynamic Band 7 clinical/counselling psychologist or a Family Interventions Worker at the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service in Waltham Forest. This is a fixed‑term post available until October 2026.

The successful candidate will mainly focus on providing Family Intervention for Psychosis (FiP) for individuals experiencing their first episode of psychosis and their families, supporting the provision of carer wellbeing interventions and carers’ groups. A core part of the role will also involve teaching and consultation for members of the MDT. The holder will have an interest in addressing inequalities.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have experience of providing interventions to families and carers and experience in psychosis services. Additional training in FiP would be welcome. Supervision will be provided by a senior Clinical Psychologist within the team, with monthly FiP group supervision.

The post holder will join a well‑established and supportive early intervention in psychosis service for people with a psychotic diagnosis and their families. They will work with people aged 14‑65 who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis, alongside a team that includes an assistant psychologist who offers a well‑being and support package to carers. The holder will work closely with this post.

This post suits someone interested in developing skills in evidence‑based psychological therapies with this client group and working with multi‑disciplinary teams. The holder will be expected to participate in supervision and CPD focused on evidence‑based interventions in psychosis, trauma‑informed care, and addressing inequalities.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide clinical supervision for MDT members undertaking FI training and give FI supervision and consultation to other clinicians undertaking FI training and delivering low‑intensity interventions.
  • Contribute to formal and informal teaching for community multi‑professional staff.
  • Commit to research in Family Intervention and family inclusive practice and ensure high‑quality FI in line with clinical governance.
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate carer‑focused education and support programmes.
  • Contribute to service development for FiP for psychosis and work autonomously within established professional guidelines.
  • Act as a role model encouraging and inspiring individuals and the team to deliver a family inclusive service, facilitate collaborative work, and provide clinical supervision.
  • Use resources and equipment appropriately, safely, and economically, ensuring duty of care at all times.
  • Participate in Trust‑wide service and policy reviews, strategic and operational planning, and quality agenda for Family Intervention services.
  • Process referrals, undertake FI assessments, select appropriate clients, and deliver specialised treatment to individuals presenting with complex psychotic difficulties, individually or in groups.
  • Use specialist measurement tools and rating scales for assessments, formulation of care plans, and monitoring progress.
  • Assess clinical risk, formulate management plans, and maintain high standards of care within professional codes, ethics, and legal standards.
  • Provide culturally appropriate interventions with carers and families, attend MDT meetings, and offer specialist psychological advice and consultation.
  • Stay up to date with legislation, NHS development policy, and records management in line with professional and Trust standards.
Leadership, Management and Development
  • Inspire and support staff, review own practice, and develop knowledge across professional and organisational boundaries.
  • Participate in service and policy reviews, planning, evaluation, and audit of clinical pathways and protocols.
  • Advocate for family‑inclusive practice, supervise, and deliver training to multi‑professional staff.
  • Maintain professional and Trust standards, comply with ethical codes, and ensure effective use of management resources.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Doctoral‑level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology or equivalent, registered with HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Masters‑level qualification in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy or equivalent, recognised by DOH and AFT, registered with UKCP as Systemic Psychotherapist.
  • Professional knowledge supplemented by postgraduate diploma, specialist training, or Masters equivalent in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, or related fields.
  • Registration with the relevant practitioner registering body (e.g., NMC, HCPC).
  • PG Certificate in Family Interventions in Psychosis.
  • Experience of working with families and carers in complex mental health services.
Experience
  • Working with people and their networks/families with complex mental health needs, including psychosis.
  • Assessment, care planning, and risk management for people experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
  • Experience working in a multi‑cultural framework.
  • Delivering HEE Family Interventions to clients in an Early Intervention Team.
  • Working with clients and families who have experienced a first episode psychosis.
Knowledge
  • Awareness and interest in family work theory and practice in psychosis.
  • Knowledge of approaches to working with families and carers in complex mental health situations.
