External Hazards Engineer

Location: Derby, Manchester, Warrington with Hybrid Working

About the Role

Rolls‑Royce SMR is seeking an External Hazards Engineer to play a pivotal role in supporting the development of our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Power Station and the successful completion of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) and other licensing and permitting processes. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a groundbreaking project that will shape the future of clean energy.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and maintain the external hazards programme as part of the overall delivery programme.
  • Prepare External Hazards submissions for the Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) Case and GDA.
  • Support engineering disciplines to ensure designs meet external hazards requirements and resolve any gaps.
  • Apply appropriate quality and governance standards to external hazards reports and submissions.
  • Present external hazards outputs to support licensing efforts and engage with regulators and stakeholders.
  • Assess candidate sites for Rolls‑Royce SMR Power Stations with respect to external hazards and other factors.

  • Technical Expertise:
  • Knowledge of external hazards affecting complex facilities (e.g., nuclear power plants) and derivation of withstand requirements.
  • Understanding of Safety Case and Deterministic Safety Assessment.
  • Regulatory Knowledge:
  • Experience with the UK civil nuclear regulatory regime or similar international frameworks.
  • Industry Experience:
  • Background in nuclear power plant design.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to represent the project internally and externally.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams under tight deadlines.
Qualifications
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Maths, Physics, or significant relevant industry experience.
Salary & Benefits
  • Salary: £40,000 – £52,500
  • Benefit Allowance: £2,200
  • Bonus Opportunity: 12.5% on target
