Job description

Overview

The main purpose of the job is to ensure the provision of the highest standard of direct patient care for patients undergoing a range of endoscopic procedures. The post holder will assist the Endoscopist and support patients, with emphasis on patient safety and dignity during all aspects of endoscopy procedures. The post holder will ensure effective communication and education in health promotion which reflects the quality standards and mission of the University Health Board. In the absence of the Unit Sister/Deputy Sister the post holder may have responsibility for the operational management of the endoscopy unit. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that all policies and procedures are observed and meet the organisation's requirements in accordance with agreed protocols. As part of the South East Regional Endoscopy plan, the post holder may be expected to work across sites (Royal Glamorgan Hospital/Princess of Wales Hospital) or cross boundary work in the neighbouring Powys Health Board.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for a caseload of patients under the supervision of the person in charge of the Endoscopy Department and occasionally the department and its resources during their period of duty.
• Maintain the standards of patient care set by the ward/department.
• Ensure that all policies and procedures are observed.
• Support and supervise junior staff.
• Provide accurate, current, comprehensive and concise records concerning the condition of the client.
• Liaise with the appropriate Clinical Specialists, i.e. Doctors and Clinical Nurse Specialists, in relation to individual patient requirements.
• Maintain all equipment in good working order to ensure maximum efficiency and to minimise cost. Manage stock levels with regard to cost and expiry dates.
• Contribute to the Out of Hours on-call rota to support consultant staff managing emergency care of patients deemed by the on-call consultant to require intervention. On-call is a 24/7 rota.

Working arrangements

• Working week is over 7 days and the post holder will be allocated weekend shifts on a rotational basis, with appropriate days off allocated during the week.
• The post holder may be required to work across sites or cross boundary as part of the regional Endoscopy plan.
